Sailors that frequent the waters of the Dominican Republic have one thing to say about sailing to Punta Cana: avoid, Avoid, AVOID! Located along the country's east coast, the town is located down a risky channel with difficult entry. Of course, this doesn't mean that those with the know how can't give it a shot, and in fact, one of the areas largest marinas is set in local waters.

If you're simply wanting to spend a few hours on the water, without the complications and cost involved with renting a boat you should take a day sailing excursion. See the listing that follows to obtain names and phone numbers for area boating excursions.

Entry Requirements

Punta Cana is an official port of entry in the Dominican Republic, making the clearance process a bit easier for international sailors. When you arrive, you'll enter local waters sailing your yellow "Q" flag, and when you dock meet with a host of government officials. This includes Customs, Immigrations, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Drug Enforcement, and the Coast Guard, which are called Marina de Guerra. Each has the authority to inspect your boat and your documentation if you would like to clear. The cost is $10(USD) per person for a 30 day visa, and $43(USD) to clear your boat.

The Punta Cana Resort and Club is home to a full service marina featuring two docks and moorings for 43 boats that measure up to 70 feet long. This is the ideal place to stay for those who'd like to dock and then sleep in the comfort of a hotel room that night.
