Flying to

Puerto Rico's major international airport is the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) which is located in Isla Verde near San Juan. The airport is a publicly owned facility, though it is privately managed to Aerostar Airport Holdings, which gives it the advantage of being one of the only technically private international airports in the region. The partnership has been successful in running and expanding the airport for over 40 years, making Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport the airport it is today.

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport opened on May 22, 1955 in order to provide a new option for international airplanes which were growing larger and larger each year. At that time, the airport had one 9,783 foot long asphalt runway, an air traffic control tower, three terminals, and a small passenger waiting area. Today, there is an additional terminal, an extra concrete runway measuring 8,016 feet long, a shopping center, a food court, and several conference rooms.

This airport is a major hub for air travel in the Caribbean, which makes it easy for tourists from around the world to find a flight from a major airport near their home town.

The following table informs you of which airlines have flights from the U.S. and the places they fly from. The online booking services don't necessarily display the best options so it can be helpful to see which airlines offer direct flights to this airport.

Next Stop Quebradillas

A rental car will get you to Quebradillas in between 60 and 90 minutes after you've arrived in San Juan. The cost of a rental is between $40 and $70(USD), and while the price of gas fluctuates daily, it is typically less expensive than the average price in the United States. After leaving the airport, you'll travel west on PR 26 exiting to PR 22 before Arecibo, then taking PR 2 west.

Another option is to fly with local airline Cape Air to the Nery Juarbe Pol Airport (ARE) in Arecibo. From there, they will drive for about 30 to 45 minutes to reach Quebradillas. Because the flights typically cost more than $100(USD) a person and only cut the driving time in half, most tourists choose to skip this extra step.

It doesn't take long to get to Quebradillas after arriving in San Juan, so tourists should not be discouraged by the fact that there is no direct path to this town. Think of the drive as a sightseeing adventure and it will make the whole process a much more enjoyable one.
