Outside of the beaches and a few parks, Red Hook is not especially known for any important natural attractions.  Fortunately it is located on an island and within a chain of islands where nature abounds no matter where you go, and it doesn't take much to see some of the most beautiful of Mother Nature's offerings.

Nature Preserves and Hiking

Do you hope to spend more of your vacation time seeing the local flaura and fauna? You may be pleased to know the area has several nature preserves nearby.

Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge is a nature preserve located on Capella Island, 4.2 mi. South West of central Red Hook. Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge wasn't fully established until 1981. Its main purpose was, and continues to be, as a safe haven for migratory birds that use the island as a winter home, or as a rest area before continuing further, but it can also be enjoyed by visitors.

Parks and Botanical Gardens

Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden

Vacationers can visit one of the many parks, or 3 botanical gardens nearby.

Emanicipation Garden is located in downtown Charlotte Amalie, 5.3 mi. West of central Red Hook. This urban park is dedicated to the abolition of slavery on St. Thomas in the year 1848. There are two memorials in the park that too are dedicated to freedom and human rights.

A second popular choice in this category is Hassel Island Historic Park. The island is 135 acres and the National Park service works diligently to keep it pristine. There is much to be seen with a visit to the island including rail road tracks and the ruins of a hospital, a cemetery, a signal station, and several military sites.
