Outside of the beaches and a few parks, Red Hook is not especially known for any important natural attractions.  Fortunately it is located on an island and within a chain of islands where nature abounds no matter where you go, and it doesn't take much to see some of the most beautiful of Mother Nature's offerings.

Nature Preserves and Hiking

Do you like spending time outside? You might be pleased to know the area has a few interesting nature preserves nearby.

Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge is a popular nature preserve located on Capella Island, 4.2 mi. South West of central Red Hook. You will need to find a boat charter of private ferry to take you over to Buck Island.

Parks and Botanical Gardens

Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden

Visitors can spend some time in one of the many parks, or 3 botanical gardens nearby.

Emanicipation Garden is located in downtown Charlotte Amalie, 5.3 mi. West of central Red Hook. This urban park is dedicated to the abolition of slavery on St. Thomas in the year 1848. There are two memorials in the park that too are dedicated to freedom and human rights.

A second attraction in this category is Hassel Island Historic Park. Once connected to St. Thomas at the edge of the harbor, this island was separated and turned into a completely new island by the Dutch who hoped to create better water circulation. Today it is privately owned, but an important natural and historical landmark.
