In order to rent a car in Red Hook and on the rest of St. Thomas, you must have a credit card with a specified available balance that is different at each agency, a valid driver's license from your country of origin, and you must also be at least 25-years-old. Some agencies will work with you on the age matter and let those 21-years-old and up rent from them, but these instances are rare, and will end up costing extra.

The Cost of Renting a Car

Although the cost of renting a vehicle will vary seasonally and by agency, you can expect to spend between $80 and $150(USD) a day, or no more than $800(USD) a week for the largest vehicle with top amenities during the high tourist season. The longer you rent a vehicle, the more you'll save, and if you rent during the summer months you'll find prices to automatically be cheaper to entire business in the off season.

Visitors will find it extremely hard to locate a rental agency on the island that offers four passenger cars due to the conditions of the roads on the island. Instead, two and four door jeeps and five to six passenger Sports Utility Vehicles are the norm.

Gas Stations

Lucky for tourists, Red Hook’s local residents tend to be patient and courteous drivers on the road, because driving on the island can take some getting used to no matter where you're traveling from. Driving is done on the left side of the road like in Europe, which will take some getting used to for American drivers, but the steering wheel is on the left side of the car, which will be a learning experience for European drivers. It is important that you take it slow as you adjust to this new style of driving, especially in Red Hook where roads can be steep, narrow, and damaged. Be on the lookout for pedestrians at all times. It is common for people to park up and down the main roads, wedging their vehicles partially on the sidewalk. This makes it necessary for pedestrians to sometimes walk out into the street to get around the vehicles.

You may notice as you drive around Red Hook that there are Blue signs along certain routes leading from the Red Hook Ferry Terminal. The St. Thomas Virgin Islands Hotel & Tourism Association has created as system known as “Tommy the Starfish Signs” which is a series of colored signs that lead tourists to major attractions around St. Thomas. The chart below details which colors correspond to which attractions.

Red Hook makes renting a car from their sole location easy by offering transportation to and from the airport for free, but tourists have the option of renting at one of the numerous other locations on St. Thomas. Compare how much you'll spend taking taxis to all of the sites you want to see versus how much a rental car would be, and you'll likely end up determining that renting a car for your stay in Red Hook is the right choice for you.
