Snorkeling Around Rincón

You may think that because Rincon is such a popular surfing destination in Puerto Rico that snorkeling is not a possibility.  Think again!  If you visit during the summer months when the surf is calm, you'll find a gorgeous underwater world just waiting to be discovered.

Steps Beach at Tres Palmas is one destination you can always count on for great snorkeling.  The area is protected by the government, so the elkhorn coral that is dominant here has had a chance to flourish while sea turtles, squid, reef fish, and dolphin visit frequently.

Most people visit the reserve as part of a snorkeling tour.  A snorkeling trip to Desecheo Island is another popular option as it is just about 30 minutes away by boat.  However, if you feel more comfortable renting a snorkeling kit and heading into the waters of a public beach on your own, it certainly can be done here as long as you proceed with caution.  Make sure you monitor the water conditions on a daily basis and never enter the water when the waves look even the slightest bit strong.

Snorkeling Sites

If you're looking forward to exploring what's below the surface you might enjoy visiting Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. This site is best visited during the summer and early in the fall when you can explore a forest of elk horn coral without the rough surf causing potential harm. The coral reef runs parallel to the shore for about three-quarters of a mile and you can spend hours exploring it on a calm day. This snorkeling site is located in northwestern Rincón.
