As the capital of the British Virgin Islands, the most populous city, and the most popular destination for tourism, Road Town also draws the most attention amongst cab drivers. While hailing a cab elsewhere on the island might take a phone call, you might just happen upon one as you're out and about in Road Town.
If you arrive on the island of Tortola via plane, you'll initially have to take a taxi either to your hotel or the rental car agency thanks to a law in the British Virgin Islands that prevents rental car agencies from having branches at the airport. Not a problem, for cab drivers are always on hand, waiting to pick up passengers whenever a new flight lands.
Although there is no standardized style of taxi cab, you'll recognize them because of the dome light on the top of the vehicle, and thanks to the letters “TX” on the license plate. Most cabs on the island are actually vans that pick up as many people as possible, rather than the cozy luxury vehicles you may be used to back home.

Visitors who don't feel confident driving in unknown areas, or who only need long distance transportation occasionally, hailing a cab in Road Town is a great option.
On the British Virgin Islands, taxis are unmetered. Instead of charging riders by the mile, the government has created a series of set rates based upon the number of passengers in the vehicle and the location they are traveling to. The more people in the vehicle the lower the rates are, which often encourages tourists to share their cab with strangers.
Although you can view the rates for getting around Road Town via taxi cab below, your driver will always have them on hand. It is important that you confirm with your driver before he gets going so that you won't end up being asked to pay something entirely different than what you thought was owed later on. On top of the rates charged simply for taking you from point A to point B, cabs also charge for extras like luggage and carrying pets. While one piece of luggage is allowed in the trunk for free, each additional piece will cost an extra $1(USD), and pets, in correct carrying cases, are $15(USD) per pet. If you need to stop somewhere on the way, but want to continue using the service of the cab you're in, you can do so for 15 minutes free of charge. From then on, it is $10(USD) for each additional 15 minutes. Also, rates go up by 30 percent between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
This table provides some typical taxi rates for this area.
