Natural Attractions in Roseau

From Roseau, you can drive or even hike to one of the most important natural landmarks on the island of Dominica: the Morne Trios Pitons National Park.  From atop the mountain you can gaze down over Roseau and the rest of the island, taking in the other sites worth seeing, such as waterfalls, hiking trails and even a botanical garden.

Do you enjoy being outdoors? There are a variety of different hiking trails and some nature preserves in and around the area.

Parrot Sanctuary is a nature preserve found within the heart of Roseau. Dominica's unique birds are prized inhabitants of the island, and at the Syndicate Parrot Reserve, they are given a safe home. When searching the island for a view of the beautiful parrots, this reserve is your best bet.

Travelers hoping to locate a another great natural attraction will be interested in seeing choices like Middleham Falls Hiking Trails. The best way to reach this trail is the trail head on the Rossou-Ludat road.

Freshwater Lake Hiking Trail: The trails will occupy a good deal of time, taking around two hours to complete at a moderate pace.

Trafalgar Falls

Although most tourists are drawn by the beaches, that isn't the only way to experience the natural beauty of the land. Areas near Roseau some interesting choices, including 6 waterfalls.

You might enjoy a visit to Trafalgar Falls, which is situated 3.7 mi. East-Northeast of central Roseau. Trafalgar Falls are located on the West side of the island, and are only a short distance form Roseau and is complete with areas for parking. There is also a hiking trail located on the other side of the island at Three Rivers Eco Lodge that goes to this waterfall, though the hike will take several hours each way.

Another attraction worth considering is Middleham Falls. It is found 3.8 mi. Northeast of central Roseau. Located inside Morne Tios Pitons National Park, this large waterfall is the iconic rain forest waterfall; complete with lush trees, moss covered rocks, and the rumble of water pounding into a pool, creating a thick spray of mist. The exotic waterfall is only part of the sight to see, as the journey to it will bring you past old coffee plantations as well as a collapsed lava tube; a geological wonder that may have helped create the island itself.

Parks and Botanical Gardens

Vacationers can experience one of the many parks, or 4 botanical gardens in Roseau.

To surround yourself with beautiful tropical vegetation, consider visiting The Botanical Gardens, which is found within the heart of Roseau. The large gardens have been part of Dominica since the 1890's, and since than have been a popular spot to visit on any trip to the island. Since the garden's founding, it has grown to include different sections, as well as a bird sanctuary where you can go and look for the rare and colorful birds that have made this garden their home.
