A 15 to 20 minute drive along the west coast of Barbados heading south from the airport will take you straight to St. Lawrence Gap – and there are several different transportation options that will get you there. Taxis are one of the choices, and a fine one at that. Clean cabs and knowledgeable drivers make this an obvious choice.

Taxi Companies

Some tourists have a hard time discerning local taxis from privately owned vehicles, but there is a simple trick that will help you tell them apart. Taxis on Barbados will always have the letter “Z” printed on the license plate, and sometimes taxis will even have a lighted dome on the roof that reads “TAXI.”

The first time you'll encounter a taxi on the island will be when you arrive, whether it be at the Grantley Adams International Airport or the docks in Bridgetown. In St. Lawrence Gap, you'll find them most often hanging around the most popular tourist attractions including shopping areas, resorts, beaches, and sometimes near restaurants. If you don't see one around, you can give one of the local cab companies a call and have them send a driver out to pick you up.

If you would rather make reservations for a cab to meet you at a reserved time and place, you should get in touch with any one of these the following cab companies.

... personalize a trip just for you...

If you're interested in hiring a driver to take you on a tour of St. Lawrence Gap or the rest of the island, now would be the time to inquire about it. Many drivers are skilled in the art of tour giving, and can personalize a trip just for you and it will probably cost less than if you were to sign up for a similar tour elsewhere.

Rates, Fares, and Fees

If you arrive via the airport, you'll notice a posting of taxi rates which list how much it will cost to get from place to place. For example, a trip from the airport to St. Lawrence Gap is $15(USD). This is because taxis on the island operate off set rates and are not metered.

If you catch a cab outside the airport, ask to see a rate card, and no matter where you leave from, discuss the rate with your driver so you are both on the same page with regards to how much it costs to get to where you need to go. Don't forget to tip your driver between 15 and 20 percent to show your appreciation for safely transporting you to your destination.

Wanting to know what you'll pay to use a cab? Take a look at the following table.

Typical Fares Around Saint Lawrence Gap
Typical Cost (USD) Location A Location B
$ 18.00 St. Lawrence Gap Bridgetown Cruise Terminal
$ 15.00 St. Lawrence Gap Grantley Adams International Airport
$ 14.50 Downtown Bridgetown St. Lawrence Gap

Barbados has a service called Airport Transfers, in which a minivan will take you and your party directly from the airport to your hotel. This service is ideal if you are traveling with a larger group, or you want more space to stretch out and relax during the drive after being cramped on a plane.

Taxis can be expensive if you use them on a regular basis, but many tourists find this preferable as they are not responsible for learning the local rules of the road. Fortunately, the friendly service and clean setting makes the cost of a taxi in St. Lawrence Gap worth every penny.
