Flying to San Ignacio

There is no direct flight to San Ignacio, but you can get pretty close

An airstrip does exist in San Ignacio, but it isn't used for commercial or even domestic flights, and is rarely open at all. For tourists, this means they will have to plan to fly to the nearest airport then drive to their accommodations.

Everyone who is flying to Belize will first stop in Belize City, then use domestic air to carry on to their next destination. For those who are visiting San Ignacio, the international airport is actually the closest one to the town. This means if you can get a flight out of Houston, New Orleans, Miami, or Raleigh, you can plan on flying direct to Belize. If you are traveling from another city in the United States, from Canada, or from Europe, however, you will have to arrange for a connecting flight in one of these cities or in Guatemala or El Salvador. American Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways all offer non-stop flights.

Flying to San Ignacio from the US

Located just outside of Belize City in Ladyville is the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE). This is the only international airport in the country, which means that every tourist flying into the country will land here at least long enough to go through customs. Because it is so busy, renovations are underway to make it even more accessible to tourists, though they are not expected to be completed until 2015. Currently, features of the airport include shops, restaurants, rental car agencies, and a tourist information booth.

Tourists headed to San Ignacio directly from the airport will have to walk across the main parking lot to where the rental car agencies are located, pick up their vehicle, and make the 90 minute drive southwest. Some hotels offer airport pick-up, so make sure to double check with your hotel before making any reservations.

Not everyone will go straight to San Ignacio the moment they arrive in Belize, though.

Flying to San Ignacio from Europe

With no direct flights coming out of Europe to any airport in Belize, Europeans making the flight should expect at least one layover. Still, depending where you fly out of, this could only mean one transfer in the United States via any of the major US based airlines or in Cancun with Virgin Airlines that flies out of London. You can contact Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport at (844) 209-7777

Flying to San Ignacio from the Caribbean

If you plan on staying in Belize City for a day or so, and are also considering visiting a few other cities in the country, plan to fly out of Belize City Municipal Airport. As the headquarters for Maya Island Air and home base for Tropic Air, two domestic air carriers, flights around Belize tend to be cheaper from this airport from the international airport. However, you will not be able to get to San Ignacio directly from the Belize City Municipal Airport.

When you do decide to fly into San Ignacio, you will be limited to one airline, unless you decide to book a charter. This airline, Tropic Air, will take you to San Ignacio from either Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, Belmopan, or San Pedro.
