Of the nearly 77 square miles of area that San Juan occupies, just over 29 square miles is comprised of water. It makes sense, then, that many of the area attractions take you to local waterways like natural lagoons, bays, and waterfalls. There are a few sites that keep your feet firmly planted on the ground, however, like the numerous city parks and a nearby forest reserve.

Nature Preserves and Hiking

Bosque Estatal De Piñones

Do you want to spend part of your vacation outside? You might be happy to find out that the area has a nice nature preserve available.

Bosque Estatal De Piñones is a nature preserve Pinones, in eastern San Juan. The park contains a boardwalk that stretches through a dense collection of mangroves. This vital ecosystem to Puerto Rico is home to a number of wildlife that cannot survive in other habits.

Waterfalls

La Coca Falls

Although most tourists have heard about the region's beaches, that isn't the only way to experience the area's natural beauty. The one example is La Coca Falls. It is located in Puerto Rico, Southeast of San Juan.
This tremendous waterfall is one of the many wonders located in El Yunque National Park, though luckily, is not too far into the forest. Offering breathtaking views, this waterfall also allows visitors to climb up close to it and really feel the thundering force.
