Depending on who you ask, those who have previously visited San Juan may vehemently advise against renting a car for a stay in the busy city. Others will talk up the perks of always having a vehicle at your disposal, suggesting there is no better way to get to know the area than to get out on the road yourself and travel from site to site on your own time. The confidence you have in your driving skills as well as your budget may be the biggest factors that decide whether or not you'll rent a car in San Juan.

Renting a Car

Most tourists will arrive in San Juan via the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and pick up their vehicles from one of the multiple rental agencies on site before driving off to their accommodations. There are also plenty of agencies throughout San Juan.

You'll find that there are both recognizable international chains and local businesses renting cars in San Juan, and your first job will be choosing who you'd like to rent with. If you plan to stick to driving around San Juan, a local agency might work for you because you'll often find lower prices. However, if you have thoughts of exploring other cities in Puerto Rico, choosing an international chain is best because they have the means to offer help if your vehicle breaks down outside of town. Local agencies do not always offer this luxury. Note that if you rent with an especially new and unknown rental agency, they may not accept credit cards, and some will have difficulty clearing up any insurance issues that might arise.

Regardless of where you rent from, you'll have to be over the age of 21 to do so, and those between 21 and 24 are charged an additional $10 to $25(USD) a day. Once you hit 25 you'll be able to rent on Puerto Rico without an up-charge. You will also need to be in possession of a valid driver's license from your country of origin.

Rental Costs

... call the renal agency directly...

Rentals in San Juan can cost as low as $40(USD) a day, but the quoted rates you see on web sites and in brochures will typically not include taxes and insurance. For a more specific quote, your best bet is to call the renal agency directly. Also, be aware that you will likely see a hold of around $500(USD) on your credit card as a type of insurance until you return the vehicle. Most agencies have a wide variety of vehicles to choose from, from gas-saving sedans to sports utility vehicles for those interested in exploring off the beaten track. Make sure to request a vehicle with an anti-theft double-locking mechanism, because car theft is a problem in San Juan.

Local firms will sometimes charge widely different rates so it can be worth your time to shop around. The lowest rates shown only apply to the lowest cost firms during the slowest times of the year. The high rates are what you might need to pay during the high season.

Driving in San Juan varies greatly depending on which roads you take and the time of day you're out on the road. For the most part, you'll find things to be similar to driving in the United States. In the more populated parts of town, the roads are paved, marked, and full of stop lights and other cars, while on the outskirts of towns in the more mountainous areas, upkeep is much less of a priority and the roads range from badly damaged to non-existent.

Local drivers are known for being reckless, and traffic can be terrible in San Juan. The maze of roads in the city can be hard to navigate, and parking is almost always a challenge to find. Seasoned travelers will recommend that drivers stick to the toll roads and main highways when possible.

Distances are posted in kilometers, yet speed limits are in miles per hour, gasoline is sold by the liter rather than the gallon, and gas prices tend to be less here than in the United States. Another important fact to note is that police cars are required to have their flashing lights going whenever the car is in motion, so just because there is a police vehicle behind you it doesn't mean you've done anything wrong. Overall, the rules of the road are similar to those in the United States, and traffic even moves to the right here.
