Flying to San Pedro de Macoris

There are numerous options available to tourists planning to fly to San Pedro de Macoris

A colorful and vibrant town, San Pedro de Macoris is located on the South Coast of the Dominican Republic.  Although most people choose to fly into the Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo then drive into town, there are actually two other airports located near enough that they serve as feasible options as well.

Aeuropuerto Internacional Las Américas

Featuring the largest runway on the island, and one of the largest in the Caribbean, the Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) is located just east of Santo Domingo.  The runway measures in at 11,002 feet long and welcomes over three million passengers each year. That makes this this the second busiest airport in the Dominican Republic next to Punta Cana's airport.  This airport is not exactly known as one of the friendliest of facilities.  Customs officials tend to be brisk and stern in manner, and hustlers crowd the departure points hoping to swindle naive visitors.  While physical violence is rare and the airport is far from a scary place to land, crime does occur and tourists should be on guard.  It takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour to get to San Pedro de Macoris from Las Americas.

La Romana International Airport

La Romana International Airport (LRM) is an interesting airport because of its unique design.  It was built in the style of a historic sugar mill, so guests are transported to colonial times the moment they land.  There are four gates and one terminal, with a runway measuring 9,678 feet long.  This is not the busiest airport on the island, but 375 thousand passengers do travel through this facility in an average year.  It is located about 40 minutes from San Pedro.

Punta Cana International Airport

The busiest airport on the island is the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), welcoming almost five million passengers to the island each year.  Over 250 flights land here each week during the height of tourist season.  Punta Cana International Airport has three open air terminals, each designated for either international or domestic flights, and there are two terminals that are made from a mixture of asphalt and concrete.

This airport is located about an hour and 15 minutes away from San Pedro de Macoris, and you even have to drive by the airport in La Romana to get there so it may not seem like to most sensible option.  Because the drive is not too outrageous, however, many tourists will choose to fly here if they can find a good deal or a flight that fits into their schedule.

Flying to San Pedro de Macoris from the US

If you're flying from the United States, you have more non-stop flight options than from anywhere else, especially since Jetblue has begun offering a significant number of flights from major flights in the U.S.  La Romana International Airport welcomes the fewest number of flights, but if you're traveling from Miami or New York City, you'll find this to be an easy destination to reach.

The following chart indicates which airlines offer scheduled service from the United States as well as which airports they fly from. Online booking engines don't always list the best options so it's useful to realize which airlines provide direct service to this airport.
