How to Reach San Pedro by Airplane

An international flight connecting with a domestic flight is the fastest way to get to San Pedro

Located on southern Ambergris Caye, San Pedro is the largest town on an island that measures just 25 miles long. To get here, tourists must rely on air travel or a ferry, and surprisingly, the prices for both are similar.

Your journey to San Pedro will most likely begin with a flight to Belize City. This is the location of the largest airport in Belize, as well as a municipal airport that is equipped to handle domestic flights.

Another option you have once landing in Belize City is to take a taxi to the Belize City Marine Terminal. From here you can hop aboard a ferry that travels to San Pedro. You can learn more about these ferries (and others that go to San Pedro) by clicking here.

Flying to San Pedro from the US

There are four cities in the United States with direct flights to Belize City: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas. It is American Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways that generally offer these flights, which take about two hours to complete. Flights out of other cities will either take you first to one of those four hubs, or make a connection in Guatemala or El Salvador.

As the largest and busiest airport in Belize, the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) is the gateway for air travel into this Central American country. Although recognized as Belize City's international airport, it is actually located 30 minutes outside of the city center in Ladyville. Currently, this airport welcomes flights from Canada, the United States, and Central America on a near daily basis, but it is undergoing an expansion project that is expected to bring in flights from Europe when it is completed in 2015.

Flying to San Pedro from Europe

The above list will also be useful for anyone planning on traveling from Europe. This is because there are no flights that go directly into Belize originating in Europe. You will need to fly into one of the above cities first, and then take a connecting flight to Belize City. Another option is to fly into one of the regional hubs, such as Cancun, San Juan, or Sint Maarten. While Cancun is the only one that has direct flights into Belize, the other destinations may be easier for you, depending on what European city you are flying from.

See the chart below for the European numbers of some of the airline you might use. Please note that some of the numbers might be region specific.

Flying to San Pedro from the Caribbean

If you're already in Belize City, haven driven from another country, or been visiting another city, you may choose instead to fly to San Pedro via the Belize City Municipal Airport (TZA). This facility offers domestic flights, mainly to the cays of Belize, and in fact one of the country's top local carriers, Maya Island Air, bases its headquarters here. The airport itself offers sparse amenities and has a 1,825 foot long concrete runway.

Check below for air service from regional airports. If there are no flights directly from your preferred airport, taking a connecting flight from another airport in the Caribbean may be a great option.
