Most vehicles are not allowed on any of the Belize's cays, so rentals are restricted to golf carts. Fortunately, golf carts are plentiful and make for a fun way to get around San Pedro.

Renting a Vehicle

As you arrive in San Pedro, you are likely to see and hear people advertising one rental agency or another, and there are a few in the area. While they are generally very similar, there may be one or two things different between companies – including fees, policies, insurance, and other conditions.

You will also soon realize that they are offering golf carts, and not cars. This is because rental cars are generally not allowed on the smaller cays. Still, tourist need to get around and golf carts have taken up the responsibility that cars usually fill.

On many islands, golf carts and other small vehicles are rented by the hour, and mainly serve as an activity rather than a legitimate mode of transportation. While some agencies do this, most of them also have day long and week long rental periods; useful if your trip is an extended one. You should be sure to check with the agency you are looking at to see all of the special rates they may have.

If you want to make sure you know the company before you rent from them, or would like to shop around and get price quotations from multiple agencies, giving the agencies a call may be a good start.

Take a look at the following chart for some of the vehicle rental agencies located in this area.

The Cost of Renting on San Pedro

As mentioned, you can expect some variation in price, especially when it comes to special deals, discounts, and partnerships with resorts. It is always a good idea to shop around a little, and the chart you saw above is a good place to start. However, even if you do not shop around, you can go to San Pedro with some idea of what to expect when it comes to rental rates.

Renting a golf cart on San Pedro is a bit more flexible than renting a car elsewhere. You will be able to pick a period of rental that fits your trip. These periods range anywhere from one hour to one month. For the most part, the longer the rental period, the less the cart costs per day. You can look at the three charts below to get a good idea of the kinds of prices to expect.

If you are only on San Pedro as a day trip, the half day rental (or eight hours) will probably suit your needs just fine.

Golf Carts - 8 Hour Rental
Cart TypePrice (USD)
Regular - 4 Seater $50.00 to $60.25
Larger - 6 Seater $55.00 to $75.00

Staying the night? A full day rental (24 Hours), may be a better choice.

Golf Carts - Full Day Rental
Cart TypePrice (USD)
Regular - 4 Seater $65.00 to $80.00
Large - 6 Seater $84.00 to $110.00

Those who have the opportunity for an extended stay may want to rent the cart for a full week or more, depending on your specific itinerary.

Golf Carts - Full Week Rental
Cart TypePrice (USD)
Regular - 4 Seater $295.00 to $340.00
Large - 6 Seater $374.00 to $506.00

As you can see, while there is a price range, it can range quite a bit, especially for long term rentals. If you are concerned about getting the best price make sure to call around first.

Gas Stations

As you're driving around San Pedro, which is only three streets wide, be aware that traffic moves on the right side of the road, and if you want to cross the bridge that connects north and south Ambergris Caye, you'll have to pay a toll of $2.50(USD).

Even in golf carts, you will likely need to refill your gas tank every now and then. There are not many gas stations on the island, but they do exist. With the few in number, you will need to plan a head to make sure you have gas to get where you are heading, especially since gas stations in San Pedro tend to close around sunset.

Since you may encounter difficulties locating places to refuel, view the listing that follows for a picture of where some are located.
