Once a monument to honor the dictator who ruled over the Dominican Republic, Rafael Trujillo, upon his death it took on new life and became a monument to commemorate the War of Independence with Spain. Today, visitors from around the world come on a regular basis to view the impressive Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración.
Visitors of Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración begin their journey in the three small plazas that surround the monument and feature bronze statues that speak on some of the country's favorite pastimes. After walking the grounds, guests can then climb the stairs and view a woman atop a pillar that stands 70 meters high. It is meant to symbolize the victory the Dominican Republic won against Spain.
The monument a large structure and completely white. The bottom of the monument features arched walls that hold of a series of tall columns, which in turn hold up a ceiling. On top of the ceiling are more, smaller arches that hold up a tower. Finally, on top, is a cross.
