Under various names, Parque Duarte has existed since the year 1800, and since then has served as the major recreation area for Santo Domingo. However, the site's history extends past the last couple hundred years. It is said that in 1503, the Spanish Governor arrested the Taino Chieftess Anacaona under charge of conspiracy and ordered her hanging. The hanging took place where the park is now.
Parque Duarte is an urban park, and is more brick-paved than grassy fields. There are however, a few statues, monuments, and benches that make the park a great place for a relaxing walk.
