The number of museums and historic landmarks in Santo Domingo is so great that it will take several trips to see them all.  You can start with the best known ones, many of which are located in the popular Zona Colonial, or you can hunt for more obscure landmarks like the Centro Olímpico Juan Pablo Duarte which was used during the 2003 Pan American Games.

Museo Mundo De Ambar

Museo De Las Casas Reales

If you like to learn about the historical roots of a foreign place, you might want to visit a few of these historical sites during your stay.

If you are looking to do some sight-seeing, visit Santo Domingo Colonial District. It is found within Zona Colonial, in central Santo Domingo. Known as the "Zona Colonial" in the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo's Colonial District is the oldest city in the new world and listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can walk the cobblestone streets of this town and feel as though they've been transported back in time.

Another landmark that often intrigues visitors is Museo De Las Casas Reales. It is situated in Zona Colonial, in central Santo Domingo. The museum is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Tuesday through Sunday.

Ruinas Del Hospital San Nicolás De Bari: The hospital ruins are renovated, making it possible for tourist to explore all around this medical landmark in the New World. This popular attraction is a great way to see some ruins without exploring the more rural areas of the island.

Miscellaneous Landmarks

El Faro a Colón

Vacationers can discover some other interesting local attractions in and near Santo Domingo.

Many travelers choose to visit El Faro a Colón. It is a part of Parque Mirador Del Este and located in central Santo Domingo. Established in 1992, El Faro a Colon was built by a consortium of Latin American States in honor of the founding of the Americas and Christopher Columbus.

Another popular destination is Antonio de Montesinos Monument. It is situated in downtown Santo Domingo. Visitors will explore the temple like monument, and head to the central feature, a plaque, with some of the words of Antonio from his sermon against the subjugation of the natives. Head outside and you will see the statue of the friar, calling out against the practices of his time.

Faro Punta Torrecilla: Punta Torrecilla Lighthouse is the second lighthouse to call this spot home. The first was established around 1853, with the present one being established by 1975.
