The number of museums and historic landmarks in Santo Domingo is so great that it will take several trips to see them all.  You can start with the best known ones, many of which are located in the popular Zona Colonial, or you can hunt for more obscure landmarks like the Centro Olímpico Juan Pablo Duarte which was used during the 2003 Pan American Games.

Museo Mundo De Ambar

If you like to become more aware of other people and places, you might enjoy visiting a museum while on vacation in Santo Domingo. To obtain additional information concerning each museum, try clicking on the name.

One popular destination is Museo Mundo De Ambar. It is found in Zona Colonial, in central Santo Domingo. Each piece of amber at the museum has a data card within information about when it hardened and what fossilized inside it.

Another interesting landmark worth visiting is Museo Memorial De La Resistencia Dominicana. It is found in Zona Colonial, in central Santo Domingo. Here you can view preserved evidence of resistance during the horrible dictatorships the area fell under. You can expect to be educated on the historical significance of all artifacts and documents.

Museo De Las Casas Reales

Do you enjoy discovering the historical roots of the places you visit? If yes, you might enjoy visiting one or two of these historical sites during your stay.

An interesting landmark worth visiting is Santo Domingo Colonial District. It is located in Zona Colonial, in central Santo Domingo. The Colonial Zone is known as the "City of Firsts" and as tourists explore the area will encounter the first hospital, customs house, cathedral, university, monastery, and more in the new world. There are 300 different monuments, homes, streets, and churches here that bring a piece of history to the present day.

Another interesting landmark worth visiting is Museo De Las Casas Reales. It is located in Zona Colonial, in central Santo Domingo. Built in the 1600's, the Museo de las Casas Reales was not just the governments' executive offices for the Dominican Republic, but all Spanish colonies in the Caribbean region. Many of the events that shaped the New World were discussed in this building.

Ruinas Del Hospital San Nicolás De Bari: Built in 1503, these ruins once made up what was the New World's first hospital. Fully operation until its demise, the hospital survived for 408 years when a hurricane damaged in 1911 beyond repair.

El Faro a Colón

Guests can explore some other intriguing local landmarks in and near Santo Domingo.

An interesting landmark worth visiting is El Faro a Colón. It is a part of Parque Mirador Del Este and located in central Santo Domingo. Not only can visitors view the monument and lighthouse, but inside they will also be able to explore several exhibits that deal with the founding of the Americas.

Additionally, if the more functional aspects of maritime life interest you, consider heading to Faro Punta Torrecilla. Punta Torrecilla Lighthouse is the second lighthouse to call this spot home. The first was established around 1853, with the present one being established by 1975.

Antonio de Montesinos Monument: Visitors will explore the temple like monument, and head to the central feature, a plaque, with some of the words of Antonio from his sermon against the subjugation of the natives. Head outside and you will see the statue of the friar, calling out against the practices of his time.
