Anthropological Reserve of Cuevas del Pomier

Anthropological Reserve of Cuevas del Pomier is a nature preserve found within the vicinity of Santo Domingo, West of Santo Domingo. Not only is the Cuevas de Pomier area one of the largest caves you can explore in the Dominican Republic, it is also the site of a pre-Columbus Taino community, and archaeologist have an active mission in the caves to better understand these cave-dwelling natives.

Vacationers looking to find a another great natural attraction will enjoy exploring sites like La Caleta Submarine Park. Created by scientists in order to see how marine life reacted to an artificial reef, this marine park is not not only a place for scientists to do their research, but a great dive site as well.

Parks and Botanical Gardens

Jardín Botánico Nacional

Travelers can spend some time in one of the many parks, or 2 botanical gardens in Santo Domingo.

If you'd like to see some beautiful tropical vegetation, you might want to visit Jardín Botánico Nacional, which is found within central Santo Domingo. Few things are more relaxing than a stroll through a well-kept garden on a nice day. Jardín Botánico Nacional is the largest botanical garden in Latin America, giving guests plenty of time and space to wander and enjoy.

Another popular attraction in this category is Plaza De Espana. Plaza De Espana is a historic plaza that runs in front of Don Diego Columbus's former residence, as well as numerous shops and restaurants. The plaza is bordered by what were once the ramparts that walled the city in.

Zoos and Aquariums

Entrada Parque Zoologico Nacional

If the thought of spending some time surrounded by animals sounds like fun, you should visit Entrada Parque Zoologico Nacional. The National Zoo is not in the nicest part of Santo Domingo, and it is highly encouraged that you do not walk here. There is a parking lot that is guarded by armed guards, so you can be sure that the car will be safe.

Another similar attraction is National Aquarium. For a quick escape from the hot sun, head into the National Aquarium where you will be able to explore the various marine animals of the Dominican Republic, Caribbean, and beyond.
