The most tourist-oriented stretch of coast on the island, Seven Mile Beach is the type of location where a rental car really isn't necessary – if you want to stick close to your resort and the beach that is. If you don't want to miss out on all of the most important sites that Grand Cayman offers its tourists, you may want to sign up to rent a car at least for a day of sightseeing.
Aside from the airport, on Seven Mile Beach rent out the most vehicles on Grand Cayman. This means you shouldn't have trouble if you decide to skip the kiosks at the airport terminal and pick up your rental later on in your stay. Either way, it is best to reserve the vehicle in advance to ensure there is one available for you – especially during the height of tourist season.
Be aware that you'll need to be between the ages of 25 and 75 to rent, and you'll have to purchase a driver's permit. The cost is $7.50(USD) and you can get it from your rental agency, from the Police Station in George Town on Elgin Avenue, or the Vehicle Licensing Department on Crewe Road.

Driving on Grand Cayman is easy for most people, especially if they have experience driving on other islands in the Caribbean. Seven Mile Beach is a little more congested than other areas of the island, but the roads remain in good order and local drivers are courteous, so most people are willing to put up with a little traffic.
You'll find speed limits to be between 30 and 50 miles an hour, traffic moves on the left side of the road, and chatting on your cell phone while driving is a big no-no. You'll find maps at the airport, rental agencies, and in supermarkets, but you can certainly use a modern GPS system.
Even though you shouldn't have any difficulties finding places to refuel, it is still helpful to see the chart that follows to get a picture of where some of them are located.

Even if you just rent for a day or so, having a vehicle at your disposal makes life just a little bit easier when you stay on Seven Mile Beach.
