Gilbert Nature Reserve

Once the private property of wealthy landowners, the area was acquired by the Bermuda National Trust in 1973. Visitors looking to explore a less seen Bermuda should definitely take the time to see the untouched island.

Throughout the island, Gilbert Nature Reserve is known as one of the prime locations for bird watching and general wildlife viewing. Hikers will also be pleased to note that the area is full of trails, most of which hook up to the Bermuda Railway Trail that connects the island. Those with a more botanical interest should head straight to the northern side of the park, where the unique cedars have been able to grow uninterrupted.

Located in the heart of Somerset Village, Gilbert Nature Reserve welcomes local residents and vacationers rooming in this part of Somerset Island. Even if you are not staying particularly close, you should feel free to stop by to check it out.

When traveling in Somerset Village, a little past the center, Somerset Road forks, with the main route going right. Follow this just a little until it intersects Bushy Park. Turning right onto Bushy Park will take you into the Gilbert Nature Reserve.

Nearby Restaurants

Of course, one of the most exciting options while spending some time exploring the area could be chowing down on a meal at a restaurant within traveling distance of the wildlife reservation. Arabian Palace is a great locale to dine at before checking out Gilbert Nature Reserve, and will be of particular interest to visitors looking for a convenient meal. Also nearby, you and your party will encounter restaurants like Cool Pleasures Ice-Cream and Misty's Take Out so you don't need to be picky, since you'll find several dining options.
