Home to one of two main bus terminals on the island, Speightstown serves as a major gateway for public bus transportation on Barbados.
At just BDS$2, buses on Barbados are without a doubt the least expensive transportation option available – and they are reliable to boot. The buses run between 6:00 a.m. and midnight on a daily basis, making their way around almost the entirety of the island. Just make sure that if you will be taking the public bus that you have exact change.
One of the main bus terminals is in fact located in north Speightstown, and there are plenty of stops around town, so it is entirely possible that you can get through your whole trip without having to ever hail cab or rent a car.
There are three types of buses on the island, though they all cost the same, travel along similar routes, and are equally reliable, so you may find the fact that they are different to be inconsequential. Public buses are painted blue with a yellow strip down the body, and are actual buses. Private buses are minivans, also painted blue and yellow, and “ZR” buses are white minivans that are not only privately, but individually owned. Just make sure you get on a bus headed where you need to go and you'll be fine. Stops are marked with red, white, and black signs, and you can check the Barbados Transport Board Web site for an up-to-date bus schedule.
