First lit in 1915 under the Danish Government, Hams Bluff Light is still in service, lighting the night sky for sailors approaching the island in the dark.

2 | Columbus Landing Site

As the only place in the United States that Christopher Columbus actually was, this site is a popular attraction among Americans, especially those interested in history. This is also the site of the first recorded clash between the Europeans and the Natives.

Travel a quarter mile (a half kilometer) to the northeast from Journeys Spa to get to this historical site.

3 | Fort Sale Ruins

Built in 1643 and abandoned in 1695, this triangular Dutch fort served four empires in its short history. Built by the Netherlands, it would later belong to the British, then the Spanish, and then finally the French who would abandon it.

Travelers will find this historical site about a hundred yards (a couple hundred meters) from Columbus Landing Site.

1 | Butler Bay Nature Preserve

This nature sanctuary/wildlife reserve is located on the ocean, and is two and a half miles (four and a half kilometers) to the north of the center of Frederiksted.

2 | Estate Mount Washington Plantation

Estate Mount Washington Plantation is an old sugar plantation that has been restored with great effort. The collection of ruins in the area have been renovated and a trail has been built so that guests can explore the many ruins in the area.

Situated on Rte. 63, this historical site is a short distance (about a kilometer) to the southeast of Butler Bay Nature Preserve.

1 | Carambola Beach Golf Club

The course has been named a "must play" by Golf Magazine, and received their Gold Medal Award. Located in a region that's a favorite for hikers and outdoors enthusiasts, the views offered here are spectacular.

Found at 72 Estate River, this golf course is two miles (three kilometers) to the south west of the center of Cane Bay.

2 | Buccaneer Golf Course

The Buccaneer boasts a challenging and beautiful course on the water, with spectacular views. The Pro Shop here features a flat screen TV and a golf simulator.

Found within Buccaneer, this golf course is located a mile and a half (two and a half kilometers) east of the center of downtown Christiansted.

3 | Green Cay National Wildlife Refuge

Administered by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, this refuge was established to protect one of the rarest reptiles in the world, the St. Croix Ground Lizard, as well as a variety of bird and other wildlife species that depend on the island ecosystem to survive.

Found on the ocean, this nature sanctuary/wildlife reserve is on the island of Green Cay, one and a quarter miles (two kilometers) northeast of Buccaneer Golf Course.

4 | Southgate

Located on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, the Southgate Coastal Reserve was created in 1999 as a protected area for migratory birds that make their way through the islands each year.

This nature sanctuary/wildlife reserve is situated within traveling distance from Christiansted, and is just 0.7 miles (1.1 km) south-southeast of Green Cay National Wildlife Refuge.

The Coakley Bay Ruins are a collection of animal powered mills that have over the years fallen into ruins.

This historical site is situated within easy traveling range of Christiansted, approximately a mile and a half (approximately two and a half kilometers) west of the center of Cotton Valley.

1 | Reef Golf Course

The Reef Golf Course is the perfect spot for golfers who don't have time for a full round of golf, or those who just want to get in a bit of practice. Featuring nine-holes, a driving range, and even tennis courses, this course is a bit more casual than the other two on the island.

Situated on Building 14 Teague Bay, this golf course is only 0.6 miles (0.9 km) east of the center of Cotton Valley.

Built in the year 2000 for the new millennium, the monument at Point Udall is a sundial, marking the first place the sun touches in the United States everyday.

Go east for approximately a mile and a half (approximately three kilometers) from the center of Knight to reach this monument, which is located in the eastern part of the neighborhood of East End.

1 | Lawaetz Family Museum

For more than 100 years, a prominent Dutch family has owned the beautiful white plantation home that is the Lawaetz Family Museum. It wasn't until recently that the family opened the building to the public, sharing with visitors their interesting history.

Situated at 52 Estate Whim, this museum is about three quarters of a mile (a little more than a kilometer) northeast of the center of Frederiksted Southeast.

3 | Cruzan Rum Factory

One of the most well known brands of rum in the world has its home in the Virgin Islands -- Cruzan. Visitors are welcome to tour the factory and learn how rum is made now and how it has been made in eras long passed.

Situated on the northwestern edge of the neighborhood of Carlton, this distillery is located one and a quarter miles (two kilometers) to the north of Good Hope Plantation Ruins.

Found within traveling distance of Christiansted, this historical site is located three miles (four and a half kilometers) to the south of the center of downtown Christiansted.

1 | Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge

Sand Point National Wildlife Refuge was established as a protected area in 1984, as it is an important area for the endangered leatherback sea turtle. History buffs may also enjoy the island, because the Aklis Site, which dates back to 400 A.D.

Go 1.9 miles (3.0 km) west-southwest from the center of Frederiksted Southeast to find this nature sanctuary/wildlife reserve, which is located on Route 66.
