There are multiple ways to get around the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, and tourists will have to decide before they arrive which form they will use as their main source of transportation. Those who are traveling in medium or large groups, who plan to do a lot of self-guided sightseeing, and who like to be in control of their own transport are the perfect candidates for renting a car.

Renting a Car

On St. Croix rental cars are mainly located in and around the airport in Christiansted, near the cruise port terminal in Frederiksted, and throughout the middle of the island, which locals have termed “mid-island.” In each location there are both big name international rental car agencies like Budget Rent A Car and Avis as well as some local places that are well recommended. Regardless of the owners, nearly every rental car agency on the island offers free pick up and drop off from the airport, the cruise port, and some ferry docks, as well as car delivery to your hotel.

The Cost of Renting a Car

Prices range, depending upon the make and model and added amenities, between $30 and $120(USD) a day, with around a 15 percent discount if you rent the vehicle for a week or more. Gas Stations

Driving on St. Croix is quite a varied experience. In large towns like Frederiksted and Christiansted, you will encounter mostly paved roads with streets signs and stop lights, but when you begin to venture elsewhere you'll experience pot holes and many roads that are not even paved. Instead, a mixture of dirt, gravel, and sand is used to carve out the roadway. There are limited sidewalks, even in the well-populated areas of the island, so keep an eye out for pedestrians, and it is not uncommon to encounter livestock in the middle of the road. Proceed with caution in these situations and allow the animals to take their time and cross.

Despite being a U.S. territory, driving is done on the left side of the road, just like in most of Europe. Yet, because the vehicles are imported from the states, the steering wheel is typically positioned on the left side of the vehicle. It should not take too long to adjust to this awkward driving style, and locals are used to foreigners practicing their newfound driving skills, and are generally very amiable about it. It can be difficult to get straight directions from a local islander because of the lack of road signs. They tend to use landmarks that you may or may not be familiar with, so don't be afraid to ask them to explain themselves. Some tourists have reported that a portable GPS system has been helpful to them.

Since you may come across difficulties locating gas stations, check out the table that follows to get an orientation of where some are located.

Renting a vehicle on St. Croix is easy to do and a great option to have for getting around. Whether you're on the island for a quick tour or you're staying for an extended amount of time, renting a car has its merits.
