Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge

Sand Point National Wildlife Refuge was established as a protected area in 1984, as it is an important area for the endangered leatherback sea turtle. History buffs may also enjoy the island, because the Aklis Site, which dates back to 400 A.D. is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sandy Point has the longest land area in the Virgin Islands, and has a total area of 36 acres.

Over 11,000 tourists a year sail over to Sandy Point regularly to observe wildlife in action. Over 100 species have been recorded, including a large number of birds and the endangered leatherback sea turtle.. Hiking is also a popular past time here.

Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is located on the island of St. Croix, near Frederiksted Southeast; it's two and a half miles (three and a half kilometers) to the south-southwest of Frederiksted.

Beach Side Cafe, which offers contemporary dishes, is also the most convenient option for visitors of this nature preserve. It's just about a mile and a half away from Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, so check it out and eat up! Turtle's After Dark and Turtle's Deli are some of the additional restaurant choices nearby. At Turtle's Deli you will be able to try a bite of American food and enjoy the Virgin Islands scene.

If you'd like to find out more about seeing two nature preserves, seek out Butler Bay Nature Preserve, which is situated four and a half miles to the north of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge. Other types of local activities include Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, which is two miles away Frederiksted.
