Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge

Sand Point National Wildlife Refuge was established as a protected area in 1984, as it is an important area for the endangered leatherback sea turtle. History buffs may also enjoy the island, because the Aklis Site, which dates back to 400 A.D. is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sandy Point has the longest land area in the Virgin Islands, and has a total area of 36 acres.

Over 11,000 tourists a year sail over to Sandy Point regularly to observe wildlife in action. Over 100 species have been recorded, including a large number of birds and the endangered leatherback sea turtle.. Hiking is also a popular past time here.

Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge lies on the western edge of the island of St. Croix, in the general vicinity of Frederiksted Southeast; it's 2.3 miles to the south-southwest of Frederiksted.
