Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge

Sand Point National Wildlife Refuge was established as a protected area in 1984, as it is an important area for the endangered leatherback sea turtle. History buffs may also enjoy the island, because the Aklis Site, which dates back to 400 A.D. is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sandy Point has the longest land area in the Virgin Islands, and has a total area of 36 acres.

Over 11,000 tourists a year sail over to Sandy Point regularly to observe wildlife in action. Over 100 species have been recorded, including a large number of birds and the endangered leatherback sea turtle.. Hiking is also a popular past time here.

Also within a short distance, you will find eateries like Turtle's After Dark and Turtle's Deli where you and your group can try a bit of American dishes and experience the flavors of the Virgin Islands.

Vacationers with an interest in seeing another nature preserve, seek out Butler Bay Nature Preserve, located 4.6 miles to the north of this nature preserve. Additional nearby activities include Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, which is two miles away Frederiksted. Also consider heading to Fort Frederik, which is another attraction not far away.
