Located on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, the Southgate Coastal Reserve was created in 1999 as a protected area for migratory birds that make their way through the islands each year. Expansion continues to this day, so tourists who have been once will be delighted in the changes that are ongoing.
Southgate serves as a habitat for a number of threatened or endangered migratory birds, as well as sea turtles. Currently in the works as of March 2013, is a Reserve Center, walking trails, and more.

Southgate is located a little more than three miles east of Christiansted.
Southgate Coastal Reserve is located on the island of St. Croix, 2.9 miles east of downtown Christiansted; it's 2.8 miles to the east of Christiansted.
If you find your belly rumbling during your visit to the nature preserve, don't worry -- you're going to find numerous choices of restaurants within traveling distance. The most convenient place to eat to Southgate Coastal Reserve is Cheeseburgers in Paradise, which offers American fare. Cheeseburgers in Paradise is just about a few hundred yards from Southgate Coastal Reserve, so stop in and peruse the menu. and Mahi's Seaside Seafood Bar and Grill are additional restaurant choices nearby. At Mahi's Seaside Seafood Bar and Grill you may eat some Caribbean meals and experience the culture of the Virgin Islands.
Active travelers that like wildlife reservations, and would like to see others, should check out Green Cay National Wildlife Refuge and ; the first of which is 0.7 miles to the north-northwest of Southgate Coastal Reserve. Other local activities include Coakley Bay Ruins, which is a mile and a half away St. Croix. Also, you might consider heading over to , which is another nearby attraction.
