St. Croix Taxis

You can trust the taxis on St. Croix to get you where you need to go

For many, taxis will be the way they get around the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix. This method of transportation is preferred over rental cars for those who will only be on the island a short time (such as day trippers and cruise passengers), tourists who plan to spend the bulk of their vacation on resort or hotel property, and for those who don't feel comfortable driving in an unfamiliar place.

Taxi Companies

Taxis on St. Croix tend to congregate in a few specific areas. You'll almost always be able to find them at the airport in Christiansted, at the cruise ship port in Frederiksted, outside of major resorts, and at ferry terminals. Taxis on the island are actually six to 12 passenger vans rather than four passenger cars, and will stop along their route to pick up more passengers until the vehicle is full. If you want a private cab, you will be responsible for paying the fare price for four seats.

Taxis are recognizable by the dome light or taxi sign on the roof, plus the letters “TX” in the license plate. This will help you to identify a cab when you're out and about and need to get someone to pick you up. You can also head to a taxi stand on Strand Street in Frederiksted or King Street in Christiansted, or call and have a cab delivered to you.

St. Croix Taxi Association is the one taxi service concerning which we have detailed information. You can call them at (340) 778-1088; or find them on Henry E. Rohlsen Airport right inside St. Croix.

St. Croix is also known to have something called a “gypsy taxi.” These taxis are actually run illegally by locals offering rides in their personal vehicle. They are no regulated by the Virgin Islands Taxi Association and people can be scammed by them. Make sure you have a legal driver by asking to see his registration card if it isn't already displayed on the dash board as it should be.

Rates, Fares, and Fees

The standardization and regulation of taxis on St. Croix make this method of transportation an easy choice. For starters, rates are set by the Virgin Islands Taxi Association rather than metered. Rates appear at the airport and on a rate card that each driver will have on hand. This means there is no room for negotiation or haggling, and tourists can be sure they won't be taken advantage of. Rates are set based upon where the trip originates and where it is going, in addition to how many passengers are riding and they are charged per person.

There are some charges in addition to the base price that passengers should be aware of. This includes luggage, which is $2(USD) per parcel, $20 to $30(USD) to transport a pet kennel, $1(USD) per minute after the first five minutes when a cab has to wait on you, and an additional $2(USD) per person for taking a cab between midnight and 6:00 a.m. You can also arrange a tour of the island via a taxi company on St. Croix. These trips and rates vary by taxi company, but on average you can expect to spend $100 on a three hour tour for four in which the driver will take you along a set route and stop at important spots, providing his or her narration about the culture and history of the island.
