Winner of the 2011 Environmental Quality Award from the EPA -- which is the highest honor given to a public farm -- the Ridge to Reef Farm (R2R) run by the Virgin Islands Sustainable Farm Institute is the first and the only USDA certified organic farm in the US Virgin Islands. The farm came into being in 2010 and focuses on restoring land that was ravished for years of plantation farming, as well as the promotion of green and sustainable living. Visitors are welcome to visit the farm to learn about sustainable farming and even purchase the produce.
The gardens at R2R are small, but each demonstrates the use of at least one sustainable farming technique including solar power, animal husbandry, and organic cropping. The workers at R2R also have a passion for holistic living, slow food cooking, and a natural connection. On site, visitors can explore and learn about a variety of farm animals and gardens. Currently, R2R specializes in tropical fruits, herbs, root vegetables, salad greens, and chicken eggs.
Set in , welcomes residents and vacationers who are lodging in this section of the Virgin Islands. Whether or not you're staying in this location, you should think about stopping by to check out the sights.
To reach R2R from the East of the island, take the paved Mahogany Road into the rainforest. After Norma's Domino Club, take the second right onto 58, and continue on until you reach the top of the hill. As the hill descends to the west, you will see a sign for the farm. From the West side of the island, take Road 58 past Creque Cam and Mount Victory Campground to the top of the road where it turns into Scenic West. Take a sharp left and you will be at the farm gate. A jeep with high clearance is recommended due to the condition of the roads. NOTE: Due to our road situation (decent pot holes) we recommend driving a jeep coming up here.
