Traveling to St. John by Airplane

You cannot fly into St. John. However, you can fly into an island near St. John and take a ferry over

Flying into either St. Thomas or Beef Island is easy to do. From either location, you are just a ferry ride away from St. John.

Flying to St. John from the US

Your first step in getting to St. John if you aren't cruising or sailing is to fly into St. Thomas. The airport on the island is called the Cyril E King Airport (CEKA) just four miles outside of Charlotte Amalie. Able to accommodate jets as large as Boeing 747s, it is certainly possible to find a flight directly to this island from many major cities in the U.S. This includes Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Newark, New York City, Chicago, Boston, Charlotte, and Philadelphia. Flights are always available from Miami, and take only 2.5 hours in the air, while the other options are either seasonal or happen less often.

If you're traveling from the states this list can be useful. Not all flights you will see listed on some booking engines are logical options so it can be useful to see which airlines fly directly to this location.

Flying to St. John from the Caribbean

Another possible flight path for tourists who can't fly directly is to make a connecting flight via the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport on the island of Puerto Rico, which offers numerous daily flights to St. Thomas. If you're traveling from Europe, the Middle East, or the Caribbean, flying to Puerto Rico may make the most sense, but travelers from Canada and the rest of the United States will have to decide whether to connect within the contiguous U.S. or from Puerto Rico. For these visitors, the decision will often simply come down to scheduling and pricing.

Still, another option is to fly into the British Virgin Islands first. This is especially the case if you happen to be coming from the Eastern Caribbean. The Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport connects the Virgin Islands with an abundance of Caribbean Islands both large and small.

Check the following table for a complete list of air service from regional airports. Even if there aren't any flights from an airport near you, taking a connecting flight from another airport in the Caribbean may be a good solution.

Regardless of which airport you fly into, you will then need to take a ferry to Cruz Bay. From Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport that means taking a ferry from Beef Island over the bridge and to Road Town. From Road Town you can take a ferry to St. Thomas (and wave at St. John as you pass it) and then take another ferry to Cruz Bay. You could also take a taxi to West End instead of Road Town, which while further, does have a ferry that goes directly to Cruz Bay.

If you are landing on St. Thomas, you can take a taxi to either Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook, either will work. From both locations you will find regular ferries to St. John.
