This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built by the British and is an integral part of the history of St. Kitts and the Caribbean. First established in 1690, Brimstone Hill Fortress was built atop an almost 800 foot high hill overlooking the coast and Sandy Point Town, the then British Capital of St. Kitts. It was designed by British Military Engineers and built by skilled slave labour. The materials used were the tough and durable volcanic andesite and put together using limestone, also available on the hill, to make the mortar. With walls up to seven feet thick, it was not only designed to be impregnable but also impressive, gaining the nickname “The Gibraltar of the West Indies”.
