Magens Bay

Magens Bay, located on the island of St. Thomas, is considered one of the best beaches in the area, featuring more than half a mile of protected, white beaches. With high praise comes many visitors, as the beach area is typically crowded, though the clear, calm waters make the location almost irresistible.

Located on the northern side of the island of St. Thomas, You should think about stopping by even if you aren't staying particularly close by. Although travel usually involves making dozens of little decisions, choosing a suitable beach may be one of the more important things you do. Magens Bay is one of many fun beaches in the Virgin Islands to consider.

Amenities and Ambiance

Often called one of the world's most beautiful beaches and ranked by Travel + Leisure as one of the "Best Beaches on Earth," Magens Bay is St. Thomas' favorite family beach. A half-mile of crescent-shaped sand and clear blue waters that are ideal for swimming and hanging out make it a great escape. The beach can get very crowded when several cruise ships are in port but walking to the far ends of the beach, you can easily find a quiet spot. St. Thomas' lush green mountains border the shoreline, while views of smaller islands lie off in the distance.

The concession stand at this spot is also an option.

Showers, picnic tables, and restrooms are offered at Magens Bay, which means beachgoers can plan on spending quite a bit of time here.

Additionally, there are lounge chairs available at this spot. You'll find the waters off-shore to be clear and good for snorkeling, so bring your equipment if you want to do some underwater exploration. As one of the more popular beaches on the island, Magens Bay, is usually very crowded during the day with tourists. It is often a little less crowded in the afternoon hours.

Magens Bay and its comforts can be found well within a popular area that can get crowded. If busy-beaches are not something you want, it will be an appropriate reason to plan your day to beat all the other tourists, like showing up before the sun it at its hottest. If not, it's possible you may be unable to completely enjoy all the services that this beach has on site.

This spot is on the North East coast of St. Thomas. Mahogany Run Public Golf Course is only a short distance away, so tourists could take a cab or probably walk to this attraction, and it is among the attractions in the area.

The nearest historical attraction is All Saints Anglican Church, which is one of the closest interesting historical sites in the neighborhood of Magens Bay.

Magens Bay is very close to Charlotte Amalie, so travelers staying in town won't have far to go. Those visiting Magens Bay who are looking for other opportunities for exploration might consider going to Charlotte Amalie, since it's nearby and is a particularly busy area of the Virgin Islands. From the beach, Charlotte Amalie is not far away, maybe a mile and a half (two and a half kilometers).


How many other people you encounter at Magens Bay will vary depending on the time of day, particularly in the high season when hotels overflow with tourists. There aren't many major hotels in the immediate vicinity, but it's sometimes enjoyed by guests from smaller accommodations in the area.
