Sapphire Beach

Sapphire Beach is located on St. Thomas and features soft, white sand perfect for a beach stroll or sunbathing. Snorkeling at the offshore reefs is popular and a nearby dive shop rents equipment and beach chairs. Windsurfing is also a prime activity in the waters of this beach. A local restaurant and a beach bar serve island snacks and fruity drinks for your convenience.

Located in East End, Sapphire Beach is on the East coast of St. Thomas. You might want to drop by regardless of whether you're staying very close. Although there are certainly more secluded beaches in the Virgin Islands than Sapphire Beach, it offers just the right amount of privacy and atmosphere to attract visitors who need a place to relax.

How to Access The Beach

Access to the beach is provided by a small carpark off of Smith Bay Road (Route 38). Guests hould turn onto Pavillion Road and take a small, unnamed path right, which will lead directly to the beach.

Sapphire Beach's spectacular views of the Caribbean and St. John greet guests, with an excellent view of St. John Bay framed by hills and private estates. The wide, soft sands and blue waters are popular with families and watersport enthusiasts, especially windsurfers. Two coral reefs provide excellent snorkeling opportunities at Sapphire Beach on the east side of St. Thomas.

There is also a great restaurant right on-site if you're interested; many find it the perfect, convenient solution for lunch. There are so many unique restaurants in the Virgin Islands, but you don't have to eat every meal in a formal setting. Many vacationers have lunch right on their towels in the sand. Did you know that some hotels are happy to pack picnic lunches for their guests? Otherwise, street vendors and casual walk-up eateries will have take-out dishes you can bring to the beach.

Lots of visitors here find that the on-site snack bar is just fine for lunch. You might also have the option to buy food from one of the local vendors who are typically found at this location.

You will be able to use a public restroom at Sapphire Beach. Also, guests will have access to lounge chairs at this location. Fortunately, the water here is fit for snorkeling, so bring your gear if you want to check out what lies beneath the surface. The view to St. John from Sapphire Beach is has been called glorious, and the waters are often calm, creating a very family-friendly atmosphere, attracting both locals and island visitors.

Sapphire Beach plus its conveniences happens to be found within an area popular among tourist. Taking that into consideration, if you think the amenities influence your decision, it'll be a good reason to make it earlier in the morning prior to when the other tourists come or perhaps try a beach further away. Sapphire Beach is in the Red Hook area, so a trip into the city is a definite option. Red Hook is the closest city and is in an area with interesting things to do and see, but isn't as sprawling and crowded as some other areas. From the coast, Red Hook is a fairly short distance away, maybe less than a mile (a kilometer and a half).


Whether or not you encounter a lot of other visitors will depend on many factors, including the capacity of nearby hotels. You can typically expect to share the sand with more than a few travelers staying at the closest accommodations.

Other Beaches

Sapphire Beach is just one of many beaches you can visit on St. Thomas.

You may also like Lindquist Beach, where there's usually lots of activity. You'll find it a quarter mile to the west. One of the best secrets on St.. Thomas is Lindquist Beach, a perfect Caribbean beach, that resides off of an unmarked dirt road, and thus stays unpopulated in a busy tourist area. However, if you're looking to enjoy a quieter scene, Renaissance Beach is a beach which doesn't see as many crowds. It is located only a short distance away.

You may also enjoy Vessup Bay, which is located within a couple of miles.
