Hailing a cab on Tobago is an easy thing to do, with plenty of taxis ready to pick you up from the airport and ferry dock. These cabs will take you where you want to go, but can quickly become expensive, so make sure to think carefully about all of your choices.
It does not matter whether you arrive by plane or by ferry, your first sight in Tobago will likely be a line of taxis ready to take passengers to their destination. If you plan on staying in the area, or will generally be walking to most places once you get to your hotel, a taxi can be a great asset.
There are several different types of taxis that travel across the island, including private taxis, which is what most people imagine when they picture a cab: a ride in which you and your party are the only ones in the vehicle; and Route Taxis, which are public and will continue to pick up other passengers along the way until the vehicle is full. Although there is a lot to be said about having the entire cab to yourself, the benefit of a Route Taxi is that they are less expensive.
Tourists are warned to be on the lookout for illegal cabs. Official taxis have registration plates with the letter "H" at the beginning of the tag number. If you see a "P" at the beginning of the tag number, this is a private vehicle and is not registered legally to offer rides for profit.
If you are stuck in a place where you are unable to spot a cab, call one of the numbers in the following table.
