Rental Cars are a great option for tourists who will be doing a lot of sightseeing, and for those who prefer to be able to come and go as they please without having to wait on anyone else to pick them up. The fact that renting a car on the island is relatively easy and affordable makes it all the more recommendable.
...getting to that secluded beach...
To rent a car in the British Virgin Islands, you need to be 25-years-old or older and have a valid driver's license in your home country. If you'll be staying in the country for more than 30 days you'll need to pick up a BVI Driving Permit, which can be done at the rental agency, for $10(USD), and then you'll be good to go.
Before you hit the road, take a moment to familiarize yourself behind the wheel. Although the steering wheel is located on the left side of car like in the United States, driving is done on the left side of the road like in England. This can take some getting used to, so tourists are urged to take their time and navigate the roads of Tortola carefully.
With regards to road conditions, they vary throughout the island. In the large city of Road Town and other popular tourist spots such as Cane Garden Bay, you'll find the roads to be paved, well lit, and marked with directional signs. However, in more remote areas of the island roads may be made only of dirt and have no signs at all to help direct you. It is important to note that if you plan to do a lot of driving outside of the tourist areas that you ask for a vehicle with four wheel drive and good suspension, otherwise the possibility exists that you may get stuck in the mud or have trouble getting to that secluded beach you've been dreaming of.
Because there are so many rental car agencies on the island, you have plenty to choose from. Some are locally owned, but most don big names likeand . Take the location of the rental car agency, the cost of the car per day, and the rules and regulations before you make your final decision.
