Attractions in the Area Around Sebastian's on the Beach

1 | Great Harbour

On the south side of Jost Van Dyke, this is a steep bay set well in from the coast and usually a little bustling. There are always at least a few boats on the water.

Visitors can find this beach on the island of Jost Van Dyke, five and a half miles (nine kilometers) to the northwest of Sebastian's on the Beach.

3 | Diamond Cay

One of Jost Van Dyke's smallest natural attractions is Diamond Cay National Park. This tiny little swatch of land off the coast of Long Bay near the Diamond Cay Marine is accessible by walking along a sand bar that can easily be covered in high tide.

This nature sanctuary/wildlife reserve is situated on the island of Jost Van Dyke, and is four and a half miles (seven kilometers) northwest of Sebastian's on the Beach.

14 | Lormer Bay

Located on the northern coast of Tortola, Lormer Bay features a thin strip of sand surrounded by the island's famous green hills. Located in between Shark and Cooper Bay, the area is largely vacant.

Found on Tortola, this beach is 5.0 miles (8.0 km) from Sebastian's on the Beach.

8 | Shark Bay National Park

Shark Bay National Park was donated to the National Parks Trust in 1999, and is the first coastal nature reserve and park along Tortola's north shore. The park spans 18.4 acres and is great for hikers looking for a beautiful view.

This park is located 4.1 miles (6.6 km) to the northeast of Sebastian's on the Beach, and is on Tortola.

9 | Mount Healthy National Park

Mount Healthy National Park protects part of an old plantation that once stood in the area. The central feature is the old windmill that was used to crush sugar cane which would then be sent to Britain, a major aspect of Colonial economy.

From Shark Bay National Park, go a half mile (less than a kilometer) to the east to reach this nature sanctuary/wildlife reserve.

10 | Brewer's Bay Snorkel Site

As the most popular snorkeling spot tied to the island of the same name, it can get a little crowded, but not so much that you should consider avoiding it. Turtles really love it here, and you'll also see an abundance of stingrays.

Vacationers will find this snorkeling site on the same premises as Brewers Bay, just 0.6 miles (0.9 km) west of Mount Healthy National Park.

11 | Brewer's Bay Dive Site

With easy beach access, relatively calm water, and colorful coral, Brewer's Bay is a great place for beginning divers to get some practice. While much of the beach is shallow, some portions do reach fifty feet deep, so while it is good for practice, divers should still have training and proper equipment.

Guests can find this dive site off the coast, a couple hundred yards (a few hundred meters) from Brewer's Bay Snorkel Site.

12 | Brewers Bay Pinnacles

Brewers Bay Pinnacles are a perfect place for divers to see a large amount of marine life in a small area, including turtles, stingrays, lobsters, and an array of tropical fish. However, the water is relatively harsh at this site, so even though the depth is generally below 100 feet, it is recommended for advanced divers only.

When you're coming from Brewer's Bay Dive Site, this dive site is found directly off the coast, less than a mile to the West.

13 | Tortola's Brewers Bay

Brewer's Bay, located on the northern coast of Tortola. If features an extraordinary stretch of light golden sand, with an incredible backdrop of dramatic green hills which overlook the beach.

Head three quarters of a mile (a kilometer and a half) to the east from Brewers Bay Pinnacles to get to this beach.

15 | Nine Finger Reef

Nine Finger Reef is the perfect spot for new divers to see what it is all about. With calm waters and depths below sixty-five feet, beginning divers will be able to handle all this site has to offer.

From Sebastian's on the Beach, this dive site will be found directly off the coast, three and a half miles (six kilometers) to the northwest.

16 | Sandy Cay Beach

Sandy Cay Beach is the only speck of white sand beach on a small green island. The other coast of the island is rocky, but Sandy Cay Beach boasts soft sand and gentle waters.

This beach is located a half mile (less than a kilometer) from Nine Finger Reef, on the island of Sandy Cay.

4 | Playground

Aptly named, the Playground is the spot of a lively fish nursery, where you will not only find hundreds of small colorful fish, but also their predators. For those divers that don't mind witnessing a potential predator's snack time, the Playground is sure to be an exciting experience.

Visitors can find this dive site off the coast, 4.3 miles (6.9 km) from Sebastian's on the Beach.

5 | Playground Snorkel Site

This snorkeling site is situated a couple hundred yards (a few hundred meters) from Playground, on the island of Green Cay and on property at Green Cay Beach.

6 | Sandy Spit

Sandy Spit is an tiny speck of an island entirely surrounded in soft white sand. There's a drop of vegetation on this island, with a few wispy palm trees.

From Sebastian's on the Beach, this beach can be found a quarter mile (a half kilometer) to the north of Playground Snorkel Site. It's on the island of Sandy Spit.

7 | Green Cay Beach

Green Cay is a speck of an island east of Little Jost Van Dyke and extremely isolated. A few people may pepper this beach, but otherwise you'll be alone in paradise if you make the journey here.

Make your way a few hundred yards (a quarter kilometer) from Sandy Spit to get to this beach, which is located on the island of Green Cay.

17 | Turtle Pass

As the name may suggest, Turtle Pass is one of the favorite spots for sea turtles to hang out and grab some coral and sponge to eat. Divers will be able to explore the area and observe the turtles and the many other species of marine animals here.

Visitors will be able to find this dive site directly off the coast, 4.0 miles (6.4 km) from Sebastian's on the Beach.

18 | Cane Garden Bay

Great local dining and colorful entertainment can easily be found along the shores of Cane Garden Bay. Live music wafts across the bay every night for everyone to enjoy.

This beach can be found two and a half miles (four kilometers) to the northeast of Sebastian's on the Beach.

37 | North Shore Shell Museum

With ample opportunity for unique shells to wash ashore throughout the British Virgin Islands, the North Shore Shell Museum has a lot of material to work with. This is a fun spot to take kids who thrill at all the different colors and shapes of shells.

Found in the neighborhood of Little Carrot Bay, this museum is about a mile (approximately a kilometer and a half) to the northeast of Sebastian's on the Beach.

38 | St. Michael Church Ruins

Once reportedly headed by a pirate priest, St. Michael Church now stands in ruins on the North Beach Coast.

This historical site is located on North Ridge Road at Windy Hill, and is about a mile (approximately a kilometer and a half) north of North Shore Shell Museum.

39 | Sage Mountain Park

The flagship reserve in the British Virgin Islands, Sage Mountain National Park marked the start of conservation as an official policy in the islands. Just as the park was a good start for the government's conservation program, it is sure to be a good start for eco-tourist and nature lovers in the British Virgin Islands.

Travelers can find this nature sanctuary/wildlife reserve on Tortola, a mile and a half (two and a half kilometers) to the east of Sebastian's on the Beach.

45 | Long Bay West

Long Bay West is located on the British Virgin Island's most populated island and offers a mile-long beach area composed of soft, white sand. The water is calm to moderate, making it perfect for an exciting swim or a surf at high tide.

This beach is 0.6 miles (1.0 km) west of Sebastian's on the Beach.

46 | Apple Bay

The beach at Apple Bay has been nicknamed the "Surfing Beach" so, if you're in search of the perfect wave this is the destination for you. During most of the year the waves are only around five to six feet.

Found on the eastern edge of the neighborhood of Long Bay, this beach is located only 0.6 miles (1.0 km) from Long Bay West.

40 | West End Kayaking Area

Kayakers will love the West End. From Tortola, strong kayakers will be able to get to three different cays, Great Thatch, Little Thatch, and Frenchmans Cay.

From Sebastian's on the Beach, go two miles (three and a half kilometers) to the west-southwest to find this kayaking site.

41 | Island Surf&Sail

This watersports operator can be found three quarters of a mile (a kilometer) from West End Kayaking Area, on the island of Frenchman's Cay and is in the marina.

42 | Frenchman's Cay Slipway

If you're coming from Sebastian's on the Beach, this marina is located less than a hundred yards (about a hundred meters) to the south west of Island Surf and Sail. It is on the island of Frenchman's Cay.

43 | Smuggler's Cove

Snorkeling and swimming are popular in the calm waters of Smuggler's Cove.

Vacationers will be able to find this beach on the western outskirts of Tortola, a mile and a half (two and a half kilometers) north of Frenchman's Cay Slipway.

44 | Vigilant Sloop

Vigilant is the mascot for sailing in the British Virgin Islands. The traditional wooden boat is 25-feet long and one of three original Tortola Sloops remaining in the islands.

Interested visitors can find this historical site one and a quarter miles (two kilometers) south of Smuggler's Cove. on the island of Frenchman's Cay, on Soper's Hole.

19 | Old Recreation Ground

If you are coming from Sebastian's on the Beach, go four miles (seven kilometers) east-northeast to find this park.

20 | Historic Main Street Western End

This trailhead is located a few hundred yards (a few hundred meters) from Old Recreation Ground, and is on the premises of Historic Main Street Walk.

21 | Sunday Morning Well

Located on Main Street in Road Town is Sunday Morning Well, the spot where the 1834 Proclamation of Emancipation was first read aloud on the island. The proclamation gave freedom to slave workers on all of the British Virgin Islands.

Visitors can find this historical site near the heart of Road Town, a short distance from Historic Main Street Western End.

22 | J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens

Named for the first known conservationist in the British Islands, the J.R. O'Neal Botanical Garden was established in 1986.

This botanical garden is a short distance from Sunday Morning Well, and is near the heart of Road Town.

The 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works was built by the McCleverly slaves over three centuries ago and the property continued to produce sugar, lime juice, and cotton until the 1940s.

Head north for a short distance (about three quarters of a kilometer) from Historic Main Street Eastern End to get to this museum, which is located near the middle of Road Town.

27 | Festival Grounds

Found near the heart of Road Town, this park is a short distance from 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum.

28 | Folk Museum

This small museum offers a quick look at the island's history, especially during the days of the slave trade. Investigate old relics and check out the old home which houses the museum.

Visited by many royal figures through time, this location once housed all important government functions and was a residence for the governor. The building deteriorated quickly in the tropical climate and was almost demolished.

50 | Nanny Cay

Nanny Cay Beach is on the tip of a peninsula on the south side of Tortola. The Nanny Cay Resort dominates the peninsula and restricts access to the beach.

51 | The Dungeon

The remains of an 18th century fort known as the "Dungeon" once housed a garrison of soldiers who stood guard daily over the island. The underground cell looks quite ominous, which is why it has been given its nickname.

52 | Fort Recovery

Fort Recovery is the oldest standing fort that is still in tact in the Caribbean. Built by the Dutch, it has never been altered or reconstructed, and it does not stand in ruins.

Playing as much of a role in the US Virgin Island culture as the Lutheran Church, the Moravian Church was the sole place of worship for the slaves. This holy sanctum helped solidify a common language, culture, and belief system among the island's workers.

68 | Hidden Reef Eco-Tours

As one of the younger ruins on the island, the America Hill Estate House was likely not built until after the year 1900. It served as a guest house to many visitors and according to local legend, a hideout for rum runners during prohibition.

54 | Francis Bay Kayaking Site

With plenty of coastline shielding the bay, much of Francis Bay is gentle paradise. However, those looking for an adventure can take the kayaks and cross the bay to Whistling Cay, an uninhabited island just to the Northwest of the bay.

Located on the island of St. John and tucked away in the Virgin Islands National Park area, Maho Bay provides a beautiful beach experience with absolutely no development. Cars can drive directly onto the beach, where the water from the bay is consistently shallow and calm.

57 | Francis Bay Snorkel Site

Nearly enclosed by land and reefs,this destination is a very calm snorkeling site that is a main intersection among travelling fish, turtles, stingrays and kayaks. Just be sure not to travel out too far, as their is a current offshore.

Go three quarters of a mile (one and a quarter kilometers) to the north from Maho Bay to find this snorkeling site, which is situated on the island of St. John. It'll be on the premises of Francis Bay Beach.

58 | Windberg Ruins

This plantation is one location where slaves refused to work. In 1831, slaves disobeyed the overseer and sent the plantation into disorder.

Make your way three quarters of a mile (one and a quarter kilometers) south-southeast from Francis Bay Snorkel Site to reach this historical site, which is located on the island of St. John. You'll find it on property at Virgin Islands National Park.

59 | Waterlemon Cay Beach

Considered to be one of the best snorkeling spots not only in the Virgin Islands but all of the Caribbean, Waterlemon Cay is a small cay set within Leinster Bay. There is no way to access the cay except by swimming to it, so most take advantage of the trip by having a snorkel and mask ready to go.

This beach is located 3.4 miles (5.5 km) from Sebastian's on the Beach, on the island of St. John.

60 | Waterlemon Bay Snorkel Site

With its calm, warm waters, this site is the favorite hangoutfor beginning snorkelers -- as well as stingrays and flounder.

Travel about a hundred yards (a couple hundred meters) from Waterlemon Cay Beach to get to this snorkeling site, which is located on the island of St. John. It'll be on the same premises as Waterlemon Beach.

61 | Leinster Bay

Leinster Bay, located on northern coast of St. Johns, offers a small beach area that is perfect for exploring the region, especially the exciting Watermelon Cay. The area features a variety of sealife among the seagrass, including starfish, sea cucumbers, and green turtles.

When coming from Sebastian's on the Beach, a half mile (three quarters of a kilometer) to the west-southwest to find this beach, which is located on the island of St. John.

62 | Annaberg Plantation

One of the main plantations to support the sugar industry on St. Croix during the 18th and 19th centuries, Annaberg Plantation was owned by the first Danish governor of St. Croix, Frederick Moth. Now, the property is in ruins and is a popular tourist attractions amongst those who wonder about the history of the plantation in the U.S.

This historical site is a couple hundred yards (a few hundred meters) from Leinster Bay Beach, on the island of St. John.

63 | Fredriksdal Ruins

Once the home to the magistrate of St. John, the property was sold to Frederick Von Moth in 1730s. Now, it honors him in name, a man who would later become a Governor of St. Croix.
