Treasure Beach Air Travel

An international flight and a bit of driving stands between you and your vacation on the beach

Almost centered between two of the island's three international airports, tourists have a choice to make when it comes to making their travel arrangements to Jamaica's Treasure Beach. The airport in Montego Bay is technically closer, however, Kingston is only about 20 miles farther out, so there are some factors to consider as you begin to plan.

Montego Bay vs Norman Manley International Airport

The Sangster International Airport is located right on the northwest coast of Jamaica in the popular tourist destination of Montego Bay. This airport is the most popular airport on the island and is infact one of the busiest in the Caribbean. Seventy-two percent of all people who visit Jamaica choose Montego Bay as their point of arrival on the island.

Regular flights are available to Montego Bay from many of the world's most prominent airlines, and if you're within driving distance of a large airport back home, you'll often be able to book a direct flight.

Although flying into Montego Bay may seem like the obvious choice, the Norman Manley International Airport International Airport in Kingston is also an option that is available to you. Norman Manley International Airport is located 20 minutes outside of the city center, along one of the largest natural harbors in the world on the island's south coast. Not quite as busy as Montego Bay, Norman Manley International Airport sees between two and four thousand tourists a week, many of which are business travelers making their way into the island's capital city. The airport is comprised of 13 aircraft gates and a runways that measures 8,910 feet in length. There are also five taxiways. Like Montego Bay, Norman Manley International Airport can accommodate Boeing 747 air crafts.

Not as many international airlines fly into Norman Manley International Airport, but the number that do is still significant.

The distance between Norman Manley International Airport and Treasure Beach is 67 miles, which is a driving time of around two hours. If there are less international airlines that fly into the airport and a longer driving time, why would someone choose to fly here over Montego Bay? Traveler's may find a cheaper flight or a flight that fits into their schedule better. This is especially true of tourists who must make a late night flight to Jamaica because Norman Manley International Airport is open 24 hours a day, while Montego Bay is not.

The Road to Treasure Beach

Upon your arrival in either Montego Bay or Kingston you will be faced with a decision: whether to drive yourself or hire a driver. The recommended course of action is to hire a taxi that specializes in airport transfers to take you to your accommodations because the road conditions in Jamaica are not the best – plus local drivers are known for their aggression. Jamaican taxi services, however, are renowned, and you'll have plenty of taxi services to choose from. To stay competitive, most offer extras like free Red Stripe beer along the way. The cost to travel from Montego Bay to Treasure Beach in a charter taxi will cost around $150(USD) for four guests, while from Kingston it will be around $200(USD).

Your other option, driving a rental car, is the more cost effective option overall even including gas, but many people feel the stress of driving on Jamaican roads is not worth the savings. Even so, if you are going to rent a car you can do so before you leave either airport for somewhere in the realm of $35 and $250(USD) a day. You must have a valid driver's license from your country of origin and be at least 23-years-old to rent a car on the island.

It may take a few steps to make it to Treasure Beach, but the flight and drive are nothing you can't handle. As soon as you sink your feet into the sand and have a cold drink in your hand, the stress of traveling will quickly wash away from your mind.
