With no public bus system throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands, tourists who don’t want to rent a car often opt to take taxis to and from their attractions of choice. On these islands, taxi drivers will not only get you from point A to point B, but for an extra fee, they’ll take you on an informative tour of the area.
While taxis are plentiful all over Turks and Caicos, especially in larger cities, there are no designated taxi stands. You’ll either have to hope for the fortune of happening upon a cab, or call ahead to the taxi service and have them meet you at a designated locale. Most concierge desks at hotels will be happy to make these types of arrangements for you. Popular spots to find cabs waiting for passengers are at the airport, around hotels, and near popular restaurants, shopping areas and attractions.
If you are out on your own, it is important to know what to look for with regards to hailing a cab. On these islands, cab operators are required by law to be specially licensed in order to drive a cab. The license they should have on display indicates that they have been through classes to ensure that they are well trained on safety standards, and that they have been periodically checked on to make sure they continually live up to island standards. Cab operators are also required to display their rates in a prominent place in the cab; however, this is rarely followed through with. For this reason, it is important that you negotiate the price of your trip before you get in and take off.
If you'd like to call for a taxi to come get you at a preset time and place, you may want to get in touch with any of these local taxi agencies.

Rates in Turks and Caicos are not regulated by law, which means each cab company has the right to charge as it wishes. As of February 2013, the going rate was on average, $3(USD) per mile for every two people, excluding children. This can add up to a very expensive car ride, so you may suggest an alternate price to your driver and see if he accepts. Some drivers prefer to suggest a flat rate per person, so always be sure to ask.
Aside from a per mile charge, most drivers will also charge you an additional fee when travelers have more than two bags per person (in addition to a small purse), which could cost anywhere between $0.50 and $1(USD). Drivers may also charge fees if they have to wait for you at a stop. It is typical for them to charge $5(USD) per 15 minutes.

Most people stay on Providenciales at hotels that are about a 15 minute drive from the airport, which means they don't see much of the island as they drive to their lodgings. Fortunately, it is possible to do so at a later time. Drivers in Turks and Caicos are also often trained tour guides. If you’ve happened upon a driver you get along well with, you can invite him to be your tour guide for a flat rate. Depending on how long and far your tour goes, it may cost you upwards of $100(USD), but this is fair considering how much you would pay any other tour guide. Especially when you take into consideration the personalized service.
