A true island paradise, Vieques is a small island off the east coast of Puerto Rico's mainland. Many tourists choose this destination to avoid big cities while being surrounded in a more natural Puerto Rico. Planning your travels to this spot takes a bit more effort only because there are so many options regarding how to get there.

Flying to Puerto Rico

No matter how you decide to make the last leg of your journey to Vieques, your first step will be to fly to the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in Isla Verde, which is right next to the larger city of San Juan. The airport has one asphalt runway that measures 9,783 feet long and a concrete runway that measures 8,016 feet long. The runways lead to four terminals and inside the passenger area there are conference rooms, shops, and restaurants.

Next Stop, Vieques

There are a few more doors open for travel plans to Vieques from the main island of Puerto Rico than if you were to visit most of the other cities in the country – including ferry travel as well as flight. The easiest option for most tourists will be to immediately catch a flight from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport to the Antonio Rivera Rodriguez Airport on Vieques. These flights cost about $125(USD) each way with Cape Air and Vieques Air Link.

Flights are also available from the Isla Grande Airport in Old San Juan for between $30 and $70(USD) each way via Vieques Air Link and Air Flamenco. This would mean taking a cab to either destination, so this is only recommended for tourists who will be spending some time exploring the main land first, or feel that saving money on a flight is more important than saving time. Take a look at the chart below for a typical flight schedule from various airports in Puerto Rico to Vieques. Note that schedules are subject to change at any time.

The final option is to take the Puerto Rico Fast Ferry to the island. The ferry departs from Fajardo, which is a 35 to 45 minute drive from San Juan. There are four ferries that make the trip each day, which takes about an hour and 15 minutes each way and costs between $1 and $4 each way, unless you take the cargo ferry to transport a vehicle, in which case you'll pay $15 to $19 per vehicle and an additional $2(USD) per passenger.

With so many options, it may take a little longer to make your travel arrangements as you go over schedules, costs, and travel times. In the end, your quiet island getaway will be worth any extra work you have to put in to make it happen.
