La Chiva

Part of the National Wildlife Refuge on the island of Vieques, Blue Beach is so named for the striking blue waters off the coast. The waters are teeming with playful fish, making it a great location for snorkeling, turtles nest here, and birds are around in abundance. Even local wildlife agrees that Blue Beach is the best place for a day on the shore.

Situated on the island of Vieques, La Chiva is on the South East coast of the island, You should consider dropping by even if you aren't staying nearby. This beach is not just a pleasant attraction, it is one of the more unique and quiet beaches in Puerto Rico. While La Chiva might be a bit off the beaten path, it permits unparalleled relaxation opportunities.

How to Access The Beach
From the entrance of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, travel for 3.5 miles towards the coast. The trip is marked by signs, but not that the road is rough, and only all terrain vehicles are recommended.

Amenities and Ambiance

Formed into a 1.5 mile crescent, Blue Beach features white sand and calm turquoise waters. Gazebos line the shore, which is backed by thickly forested land. Not far off shore there is a small cay that makes for pretty pictures from the beach. Swimmers should stay away from the island though, as bombs and military weapons have been found near and on the island.

Lots of visitors make use of the picnic tables at La Chiva, where you can park your belongings for the afternoon, or set up a quick lunch.

Unfortunately, restrooms will not be available here, so if you're visiting with small children you might want to consider a different location. You'll find the waters off-shore to be clear and good for snorkeling, so bring along some gear if you're hoping to find some interesting marine life.

Visitors will find this beach on the South East coast of Vieques; the area hosts attractions such as Puerto Ferro Lighthouse, which is not very far away, so visitors have the option to walk or to take a cab.

Other Beaches

Vieques has many nice beaches, so if La Chiva doesn't suit you, you can still find a great spot.

You might also enjoy Naguabo Beach, found 22 and a half miles to the west. However, if that's not exactly what you're looking for, Secret Beach offers a few more possibilities for excitement, and is closer to nearby attractions. You'll find it three quarters of a mile to the east-northeast.

You may also want to consider Esperanza Beach, located reasonably close-by, which means a quick cab ride is an easy option.

There are countless experiences to enjoy in Puerto Rico, and dropping by La Chiva is just one way to appreciate a pretty afternoon.
