La Chiva

Part of the National Wildlife Refuge on the island of Vieques, Blue Beach is so named for the striking blue waters off the coast. The waters are teeming with playful fish, making it a great location for snorkeling, turtles nest here, and birds are around in abundance. Even local wildlife agrees that Blue Beach is the best place for a day on the shore.

Located near the center of the island of Vieques, La Chiva is on the South East edge of the island, You might think about stopping by even if you aren't staying in the immediate vicinity. La Chiva is a distinguishable relaxation spot because it's perfect for getting away from vacation stresses, like overly crowded restaurants and attractions. Most other beaches in Puerto Rico offer views of the sea that are just as pretty, but are usually more cramped because they're right around the corner from the area's major hotels and resorts.

How to Access The Beach
From the entrance of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, travel for 3.5 miles towards the coast. The trip is marked by signs, but not that the road is rough, and only all terrain vehicles are recommended.

Amenities and Ambiance

Formed into a 1.5 mile crescent, Blue Beach features white sand and calm turquoise waters. Gazebos line the shore, which is backed by thickly forested land. Not far off shore there is a small cay that makes for pretty pictures from the beach. Swimmers should stay away from the island though, as bombs and military weapons have been found near and on the island.

You'll be able to use picnic tables at this beach, which make beach dining less messy, and are good spots for lounging.

Keep in mind that restrooms won't be found on-site, so if you're visiting with small children you might want to consider a different location. The water here is clear and good for snorkeling, so purchase or rent some equipment if you're looking to see what goes on beneath the surface.

Beach-goers who plan to take full advantage of the comforts offered here, are in luck; La Chiva happens to be situated in an area that is rarely overpopulated. As such, it doesn't matter the part of the day you show up, since there's a small chance you have to contend with possible other visitors who will also want access to the comforts that are there.

Other Beaches

Vacationers looking for a beach that's right for them will have other options if La Chiva doesn't suit their tastes.

You might also enjoy Naguabo Beach, situated 22 and a half miles to the west. More active guests, though, may be interested in Secret Beach, which could provide more action, and is closer to additional things to do and see nearby. It's found three quarters of a mile to the east-northeast.

Another sun-drenched spot to consider is Esperanza Beach, located six miles away.

Of course, there is much more to do besides lounge on the sand in Puerto Rico, but taking a swim at La Chiva is certainly a fun way to enjoy the area's natural attractions.
