Esperanza Beach

Set on the south side of Isla de Vieques in El Malecón is a favorite beach amongst locals with families: Playa Esperanza. The each is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, as well as holidays, and it available for all to use at no fee. While their are no facilities on shore, off shore serves as the perfect place for a plethora of water activities, from your basic swimming to snorkeling and kayaking.

Located on the island of Vieques, Esperanza Beach is on the South West coast of the island, You might want to drop by even if you aren't staying very close. Peace and quiet is what you'll find at the majority of Puerto Rico's beaches, but at Esperanza Beach, you'll find the same sense of serenity, without sacrificing a fun and social atmosphere.

How to Access The Beach
Playa Esperanza is located about an hour outside of San Juan. Head west on Route 22 and exit at #46 where you will go north on Road 686. 686 dead end at 685, where you will go left. Take a right onto 616 until it dead ends. There, you will find a dirt road that leads right to the beach.

Amenities and Ambiance

Looking out over the waters of Esperanza Beach gives you quite a view. The sand is powder white, and the waters are a bright blue and so clear you can see to the bottom for a decent distance off shore. There is an old fishing pier, Muelle de la Caña, which brings on feelings of nostalgia for days gone by, and to the right of that you can see Monte Pirata on the horizon. Colorful fishing boats float in the distance, and behind them you can see another small island called Cayo Afuera, which can be accessed from Esperanza by kayak.

As you walk down the beach, the color of the sand begins to darken until it has turned fully black. Upon the shores, driftwood, sea glass, and debris can be found in abundance.

You will be able to use a public restroom at Esperanza Beach. The water here is clear enough for snorkeling, so bring your gear if you're hoping to find some interesting marine life.

Esperanza Beach plus its choice of comforts are of course found well within a popular area that can get crowded. As such, if you know that the amenities are a crucial feature, it'll be a good cause to get there earlier in the morning before most of the other people show up or going to a beach further away. Otherwise, it's possible you may not be able to use all the services that the beach offers its guests.
