Esperanza Beach

Set on the south side of Isla de Vieques in El Malecón is a favorite beach amongst locals with families: Playa Esperanza. How to Access The Beach
Playa Esperanza is located about an hour outside of San Juan. Head west on Route 22 and exit at #46 where you will go north on Road 686. 686 dead end at 685, where you will go left. Take a right onto 616 until it dead ends. There, you will find a dirt road that leads right to the beach.

Amenities and Ambiance

Looking out over the waters of Esperanza Beach gives you quite a view. The sand is powder white, and the waters are a bright blue and so clear you can see to the bottom for a decent distance off shore. There is an old fishing pier, Muelle de la Caña, which brings on feelings of nostalgia for days gone by, and to the right of that you can see Monte Pirata on the horizon. Colorful fishing boats float in the distance, and behind them you can see another small island called Cayo Afuera, which can be accessed from Esperanza by kayak.

As you walk down the beach, the color of the sand begins to darken until it has turned fully black. Upon the shores, driftwood, sea glass, and debris can be found in abundance.
