Landmarks on Vieques

In spite of the island's small size and secluded nature, there are actually several important landmarks that tourists should consider checking out.  These sites tend to be ruins that tell the tale of how Vieques came to be the destination it is today just by allowing visitors to look around and explore on their own.

One popular destination is Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust. It is located in Esperanza, Vieques. The Vieques Trust manages several facilities around the island including the History and Culture Museum, Marine Life Exhibit, William and Mary Littleford Pavillion, Baker BioBay Room, and VCHT Garden.

Historical Sites

If you enjoy exploring the historical roots of foreign countries, you might enjoy visiting a few of these historical sites during your vacation.

A landmark worth visiting is Fortín Conde De Mirasol. It is found in Isabel Segunda, Vieques. Built in 1845, Fortin Conde De Mirasol was eventually turned into a prison and place of execution for many prisoner. Near complete ruins by the late 1900's, the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture restored the complex, finishing in 1991.

Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, Punta Mulas Lighthouse now houses a museum with information regarding the maritime history of not only Vieques and Puerto Rico, but of the Americas as well.
