Sun Bay Beach

Sun Bay Beach is the only Balneario Público, or government maintained beach on the island of Vieques. This means it is the only beach with facilities and life guards, but it is also the only beach you have to pay to park at. Still, it is one of the nicest beaches on the island, and can fill up with both locals and tourists on weekends.

Sun Bay Beach is popular for sunbathers, swimmers, and snorkelers due to the relatively clear calm waters, but camping is also allowed on the beach.

Located near the heart of the island of Vieques, Sun Bay Beach is on the South West coast of the island, You should consider dropping by even if you aren't staying nearby. Those of you who want the best of both worlds——a sense of seclusion, but the option for activity—— should pay a visit to Sun Bay Beach. It's not the type of beach that gets packed every day, but it's not totally secluded either.

How to Access The Beach

To drive to Sun Bay Beach, take Route 997 and park in the designated parking lot. Many people mind it more efficient to park somewhere in the village of Esperanza and walk along the shore for a half a mile to the beach. This saves you the parking fee.

Amenities and Ambiance

Sun Bay Beach, called Sombe by locals, is a mile long stretch of sand formed into a crescent with Cayo de Tierra and Punta Negra on either side. The sand is powder white and lined with coconut palms and sea grape trees, and the waters, which come from the Caribbean Sea, are bright turquoise.

The concession stand located here is another lunchtime alternative. On some days, it may be possible to try local specialties from one of the mobile vendors who operate at or near this spot.

Picnic tables are some of the most useful amenities found here——especially around lunchtime.

For your convenience, restrooms are available at Sun Bay Beach. Showers are provided for visitors, so you don't have to go back to your hotel sandy. Happily, the off-shore waters are clear and good for snorkeling, so grab your gear if you want to do some underwater exploration.

With that said, you will want to be sensitive to the fact that while there are definitely at least one or two conveniences present while at Sun Bay Beach, it can be found in an area that sees many visitors. This means that if you feel that these amenities can make or break a good time, it is a smart idea to show up earlier in the day prior to when the crowds do or even going to a more secluded beach away from the major areas. Or you might miss the opportunity to fully use all the amenities that Sun Bay Beach offers.
