The fort for which the town of Vieux Fort was named still stands, quietly watching guard over all who inhabit the area, even though military forces have long since abandoned it. Today, tourists visit this special structure in droves, in addition to many of the other important attractions that are readily available to anyone who wishes to seek them out.
You'll find an abundance of beaches to consider visiting in and around the area. Snorkeling is an option at some of these beaches, for visitors who enjoy this relaxing pastime. You can click on the name of the beach to get additional information concerning that particular stretch of sand.
Vieux Fort: Winding your way out to the tip of the peninsula south of Hewanorra International Airport, you'll need to make a right as you reach the fork just past the Villa Wellness Center near the peninsula's highest point. You'll pass a couple of residences, then make a right as you reach another fork in the road.
Another place that beach-goers can consider is Anse des Sables. Because of the strong gusts of wind at Anse des Sables, the area is particularly popular for windsurfing. Flanked by Vieux Fort Bluff and looking out onto Maria Major Island, there are splendid views in all directions at this tropical paradise.
Jalouise: This crescent-shaped little beach used to be one of the island's black sand beaches until it was covered with powdery white sands. The real draw, though, is its arrestingly beautiful location in between some thoroughly impressive, world-famous pitons.
