In the past, tourists arriving at the airport in Vieux Fort have been discouraged from renting a car thanks to the winding roads that can be difficult to manage by those prone to motion sickness. A recent effort to update these roads has proven fruitful, and while it is not necessary to rent to get around this area, it is now more popular and easy to manage.
First things first. If you are under the age of 25, you will not be able to rent a car in Vieux Fort, so you'll have to arrange other means of transportation. If you meet the age requirements, the next thing you'll have to do is pick up a local driver's permit for $20(USD), or arrive with an International Driver's Permit on hand. If you need the local permit, you can purchase it from the car rental agency you choose, from the immigration office in the airport, or from the police station in Gros Islet.
Cars in all shapes and sizes are available here. Let your intended activities and party size guide you as you decide which option is best for you. Extensive tours of the island will require that you reserve a sports utility vehicle that will be able to handle some of the more rugged roadways, but if you only need the vehicle to get to and from restaurants, shops, and the like, an economy model should get you through your trip just fine.

At one time, visitors would complain about the narrow, winding roads that lead you from Vieux Fort to Castries and other parts of the island, but the government has been working hard to change all that. Within town, you should have no trouble getting around on the smooth, well-marked roads, and there are highways that get you from town to town without inducing motion sickness. The one thing that will take some getting used to for many is the fact that driving is done on the left side of the road. It shouldn't take long to become used to this, and once you do you'll feel like a pro driving on local roads.
You will want to make sure to stick to the posted speed limit, which is usually around 30 miles per hour, and always have everyone ride with their seatbelt on. Another important tip: if you're going around a blind corner, make sure to give warning to other drivers by honking your horn.
