A UNESCO world heritage site, the 1635 Fort Amsterdam is considered to be the most important of the eight forts on Curacao -- perhaps because it actually saw battle, but it could also be that it is well-restored (yet still not the most well-restored on the island), or even that it is set in a popular district of the island and thus gets a lot of foot traffic.

The town was established in 1634 and has continues to grow continuosly, thriving into a modern town with historic leanings that is split up into several distinct districts in which the architecture is a blend of European, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch in style.
Situated near the heart of downtown Willemstad, this historical site is a short distance from Dutch Reformed Church.
