Landhuis Brievengat

Landhuis Brievengat was built around the middle of the 18th century, and was one of the largest plantations on the island. In 1877 the home was destroyed in a hurricane, but the National Trust restored it to its former glory, and now it stands as a history museum.

What to Expect

Inside Landhuis Brievengat is a small museum featuring antiques and local crafts. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds to see how wealthy families lived on the island during the 18th century.

Landhuis Brievengat opens up into a large gallery and a wide staircase leading to the second story. Out front, two watch towers stand that were rarely actually used for watching. Instead, slaves were often locked within them for bad behavior, and over the years they became known as "casa di palomba," which means loves nest because they were a popular place to have an affair.
