Willemstad Historical District

What appears to be a typical port town is actually a major historical attraction, even recognized as UNESCO World Heritage City. The town was established in 1634 and has continues to grow continuosly, thriving into a modern town with historic leanings that is split up into several distinct districts in which the architecture is a blend of European, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch in style.

The four historic districts of Willemstad are Punda, Otrabanda, Pietermaai, and Scharloo, which are separated by the waters of the natural harbor. Each district is distinct in its planning concepts but they share historic Dutch architecture and a tropical feel.
