How to Reach Xcalak by Airplane

A flight to Cancun is what it takes to get to Xcalak

With no official airport in Xcalak, tourists are forced to look for other options when planning to fly to the remote town. That other option is located approximately five hours away in Cancun. While this may seem like quite the trek to get to your vacation destination, most agree it is worth visiting one of the last places in the Mexican Caribbean that remains true to its origins as quiet fishing village.

Cancun International Airport

The Cancun International Airport (CUN) serves about 14 million passengers each year. The airport has two runways, three terminals (two international and one domestic), and 68 gates, and is the second busiest airport in the country. Because of large volume of passengers that travel through this airport, every major air line from Canada and the United States has taken notice and all offer regular flights to this destination, even during what would normally be considered the off-season of tourism.

The airport itself boasts a huge number of facilities that entice visitors to choose to fly there, including an extensive food court, five sit-down restaurants, duty free shops, a pharmacy, a spa and salon, facilities for the disabled, and medical services.

One thing to be aware of when you travel to Cancun International Airport is the process of going through customs. While you're still on the plane, you'll receive a customs form that should be filled out and presented to an official when you arrive. The official will then signal you to press a button that will turn a light green or red. Green, and you are free to go. Red, and you will be further inspected. This process is meant to be completely random and prevent profiling.

Next Stop, Xcalak

It takes five hours to drive to Xcalak, which you can do by renting a car or hiring an airport transfer service to take you. This option can be a bit pricy, but many people feel it is worth it to be able to sit back and enjoy the ride, taking in the sites, and letting a knowledgeable driver do the work.

The bus is an option, but certainly not the best one. Because of its distant location, you'll have a hard time making arrangements, and in fact, only two intercity buses stop here each day; one at 11:00 a.m. and one at 8:00 p.m. with Caribe Bus Line. The buses travel here from Chetumal, which means you'll have to first take a bus from Cancun to Chetumal, then switch lines to complete the journey. This can take about eight hours.

Finally, you can hire a charter to fly you to the small air strip that lies within Xcalak. The strip is not large enough to handle international airplanes, but small charters fly in on occasion. If this sounds like a good option for you, you can book the charter for up to five passengers and it typically costs around $800(USD) in total.

Although Xcalak is quite a distance away from the nearest international airport, that shouldn't prevent tourists from traveling to this remote, and highly sought after destination.
