Like much of the activity in Xcalak, snorkeling is a laid back affair that invites guests to go out and explore on their own or with a local fisherman.
While there are one or two dive centers and tour guides in Xcalak that offer specialized snorkeling tours, most people choose instead to hire a fisherman to bring them out to the reef for a few bucks and wait for them while they go in on their own and explore the coral, rays, fish, and occasional shark.
You can also bring your gear or rent a snorkel kit from the dive center and take to the on your own. The best snorkeling can be found to the south of the town, where in some places the reef is so shallow that it can sometimes be seen just above the water when the tide is low. If you turn around go north of town, there is a lighthouse where the reef comes close to shore and is very healthy as well. There is so much coral here, in fact, that is can be hard getting into the water.
If you're looking for a business offering snorkel rentals, excursions, or similar services, you can check with XTC Dive Center.
