With few white sand beaches nearby, locals take what they can get and opt for the convenient cool water of Bacalar Lagoon. Heading to this fresh water "beach" is a sure way to get in all your aquatic needs without the long drive to the coast.
Set in Bacalar, Bacalar Lagoon Beach is on the Western Shore coast of Mexico. You might want to drop by even if you aren't staying in the immediate vicinity.
The lagoon access is located just north of the fort, and no one in Bacalar should have any trouble finding it. From Chetumal, you will need to take Route 186 to 307 and along the coast of the lagoon until you get to Bacalar. Make sure you have a map before making the trip though, on wrong turn and you can end up in Belize.
While some spots along the shoreline of the lagoon have sand, this main access is more grass and dirt. However, the lagoon water is as clear as any Caribbean beach. This makes it a popular spot for snorkelers, divers, and kayakers. Just be careful if you choose to spend a day at the lagoon, even along the coast the depth can change rapidly.
Unfortunately, you won't find any public restrooms along this coastline, so those of you traveling with small children may want to consider another spot. The water here is clear enough for snorkeling, so grab some equipment if you're looking to see what goes on beneath the surface.
The beach is wonderful, but the surrounding area has a lot to offer, too. Look for it on the Western Shore coast of Mexico. It is near some interesting sites like Fuerte de San Felipe, which is one of the favorite destinations in the area.
