Ferries to Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a small island off the coast of Cancun and is only accessible by water. Those who can't afford to hire a private yacht charter, or really have no desire to, can take a public ferry instead. There are two main options available, one car ferry, and one water taxi available.

Maps

Magaña Express Service is perhaps the most trusted option, as it has been in operation for generations. This service is available from Puerto Juarez in Cancun, and offers rides for 35 pesos, or about $3(USD), every half an hour starting at 5:10 a.m. Two blocks south of this pier is Gran Puerto, where the newer UltraMar ferry service operates. These catamarans are more modern and allow pets aboard the vessel. They don't run any faster than Magaña Express, and they cost 80 pesos, which is about $6.20(USD). It takes about 20 minutes to cross.

Even further south at Punta Sam, you can take the car barge. Tourists do not generally have much use for this service because rental car companies will rarely allow their vehicles to cross to Isla Mujeres. The ferry takes about 45 minutes to cross and can cost between 18 and 220 pesos depending on the size of your vehicle. Check the chart below for schedules and fees.

The final option for travel to Isla Mujeres is a water taxi that leaves from El Embaracadero at Playa Linda in the Hotel Zone. It costs $15(USD) for a round trip ticket, and the schedule changes depending on the demand. In the height of tourist season, you can expect to see eight crossings available.

Cozumel Ferry

Cozumel, a well-known vacation destination, is an island just off the coast of the city of Playa Del Carmen. Two ferries run almost continuously, providing access to the island from the shore. Schedules tend to change frequently, and travelers should always ensure posted schedules are accurate. As a rule, however, the ferry schedule will look like the following:

Cozumel Ferry Schedule

5:00 a.m. 4:00 a.m.
7:00 a.m. 6:00 a.m.
8:00 a.m. 7:00 a.m.

7:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m.
9:00 p.m.
11:00 p.m.

The trip lasts just under an hour and the fare for each one-way ticket is $1(USD). A separate return trip ticket will have to be purchased upon departing the island.

In Playa Del Carmen, tickets are sold at several locations throughout the city and are almost always available. Leisure travelers are advised against taking the early morning and late afternoon boats because they tend to be packed with workers making their way to and from the island. The best time to catch a ferry is midday or evening, when the weather will be pleasant and the boat uncrowded. Tickets for the return trip may be purchased at the departing dock on Cozumel.

Caution

Regardless of which ferry service you choose to use, be aware of scam artists who will try and convince you that the ferries are not currently running. They will offer to take you for almost double the price and will take double the time to cross. Although you are welcome to hire these sailors to take you across if you'd like a private ride, their boats are generally unable to handle to waters when they turn even slightly rough so it is not a recommended option.
